Summary

We are looking to appoint a new apprentice IT Technician to join our Network team at The John Roan School. You will gain experience of supporting an IT team in delivering, maintaining and supporting technology. Opportunities also to gain wider technical knowledge and experience across the cluster are expected and will be beneficial to all.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing high quality, first and second line technical support for the IT service desk; recording all calls and activities within the service desk tool, within the SLA guidelines
  • Setting up user accounts, implementing password changes, and resolving work area problems (this includes detecting illegal access, lost passwords, bans)
  • Keeping records of all users including the management of laptop loans
  • Handling printing problems – both hardware and software
  • Dealing with user account problems as and when they occur
  • Hardware – routine checking, fault finding and rectifying, general maintenance
  • Stock control of consumables and hardware ordering, distribution and paperwork
  • Escalating calls or technical issues internally or to third parties as appropriate
  • To assist and train students and staff in the use of the Network when applicable
  • Changing telephone extensions and names on the school phone system
  • Assisting the IT Lead in all IT related projects
  • Updating IT equipment and maintaining the asset register
  • Assistance with the movement and setting up of IT and other AV equipment e.g. projectors and screens for presentations

  • Interpret and prioritise internal or external customer's requirements in line with organisation's policy
  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques to undertake fault finding and rectification

  • Operate safely and securely across platforms and responsibilities maintaining the security of personal data of internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers and other relevant stakeholders
  • Manage and prioritise the allocated workload effectively making best use of time and resources
  • Complete documentation relevant to the task and escalate where appropriate
  • Install or undertake basic software upgrades,either physically or remotely
  • Establish and diagnose the extent of the IT support task, in line with the organisation's policies and Service Level Agreements
  • Provide remote/F2F support to resolve customer requirements
  • Maintain a safe working environment for own personal safety and others in line with Health & Safety appropriate to the task
  • Identify and scope the best solution informed by the system data associated with the task
  • Test and evaluate the system's performance and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Escalate non routine problems in line with procedures
  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment.
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements.
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions or customer’s requirements.

Your training plan

The Level 3 IT Technician is delivered by United Apprenticeships.

The apprentice will complete training on the job from The John Roan School, including remote CPD sessions (a minimum of 6.5 hours per week during normal working hours) and two national face to face conferences.

Other requirements

You will be based at The John Roan School in the South East London Cluster. You may be required at times to work at the other 3 sites within the South East London Cluster (Bacon’s College, Sedgehill Academy and Conisborough College). The Apprentice IT Technician post reports to the Senior IT Technician. You will be enthusiastic about working with young people within a school environment to help them to fulfil their academic ambitions. You will have strong numeracy and literacy skills, along with good analytical and problem-solving abilities. You will also be able to evaluate your own learning needs and actively seek out opportunities for development.
