Are you passionate about developing others and improving the quality and safety of maternity care? We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic midwife to join our Education Team as a Practice Development Midwife on a 12-month secondment for 1 day per week.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the education, training and development of the maternity workforce. Working alongside the Education Team, you will support the delivery of clinical skills training, emergency skills programmes, competency development and workforce initiatives that help ensure staff are equipped to provide safe, effective and evidence-based care.

Main duties of the job

As a Practice Development Midwife, you will support the education, training and development of the maternity workforce, helping to ensure staff have the skills and competencies required to deliver safe, effective and evidence-based care. Working closely with the Education Team and Lead Midwife for Education and Workforce, you will contribute to the delivery of mandatory training, emergency skills training, clinical skills education, competency assessment and workforce development initiatives.

You will act as a visible clinical role model, supporting staff development in practice, facilitating learning opportunities and contributing to quality improvement activities. The role also includes supporting compliance with national maternity standards, participating in multidisciplinary training programmes and contributing to service development initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Practice Development Midwife will support the delivery of education, training and workforce development activities across maternity services, helping to ensure staff maintain the knowledge, skills and competencies required to provide safe, effective and evidence-based care.

Key duties will include supporting the development and delivery of mandatory and statutory training programmes, emergency skills training, clinical skills education, competency assessments and multidisciplinary training initiatives. The post holder will contribute to the implementation of the maternity Training Needs Analysis, support compliance with national and local training requirements and assist in monitoring and reporting training activity and outcomes.

The post holder will act as a visible clinical resource within the maternity service, supporting staff development in practice, facilitating reflective learning and promoting the application of evidence-based practice. They will contribute to quality improvement initiatives, guideline development, incident learning and governance activities that support the delivery of high-quality maternity care.

The role will support workforce development by assisting colleagues undertaking development programmes, supporting newly qualified staff and contributing to recruitment and retention initiatives. The post holder will also support the delivery of multidisciplinary training programmes, including PROMPT, and contribute to achieving compliance with maternity safety standards and national requirements.

The Practice Development Midwife will work closely with the Lead Midwife for Education & Workforce, Director of Midwifery, Head of Midwifery, Midwifery Matrons, Consultant Midwives, Clinical Practice Facilitators, specialist midwives and multidisciplinary colleagues across maternity, obstetric, anaesthetic and neonatal services. The role will also maintain effective working relationships with Higher Education Institutions, Local Maternity and Neonatal System partners and other external stakeholders to support the ongoing development of maternity services.

Knowledge and experience

  • Evidence of substantial clinical experience and ability to function at level required of the post
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching and assessing within a clinical environment
  • Knowledge of current developments in midwifery and political awareness of the NHS

Skills and competencies

  • Commitment to self-development with ability to demonstrate in depth knowledge of key policies and themes in healthcare provision in the UK
  • Facilitating and supporting others
  • Evidence of report writing and presenting skills, to include formal presentations
