Teacher of Sociology

Location: Newham

School Type: Secondary School & Sixth Form (Co-educational)

Contract: Full-Time, Permanent or Fixed-Term

Start Date: January Start

An Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ secondary school and Sixth Form in the culturally rich and vibrant Inner London Borough of Newham is seeking an intellectually curious, articulate, and dynamic Teacher of Sociology to join their flourishing Social Sciences department starting in January . This is a stellar opportunity for a subject specialist, whether an experienced educator looking to elevate their career within a high-performing academic environment or an ambitious Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire critical inquiry, societal analysis, and empirical research across a high-aspiring student body.

About the Role

As a Teacher of Sociology, you will encourage students to dissect contemporary society, social institutions, and cultural dynamics with academic rigor. Joining the department for the spring term, you will deliver structured, high-impact lessons across Key Stage 4 (GCSE Sociology) and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Sociology), exploring key theoretical frameworks such as Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism, and Postmodernism, alongside core modules including Education, Crime and Deviance, Families and Households, Social Stratification, and Research Methods.

  • Start Date: January

  • Environment: A flagship Inner London secondary school celebrated for exceptional student progress scores, outstanding Sixth Form outcomes, and a strong commitment to social mobility and global citizenship

  • Culture: A collaborative, thought-provoking, and well-resourced department featuring shared digital schemes of work, dedicated subject mentors, and proactive leadership

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver academically challenging, engaging Sociology lessons across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 that cultivate sharp analytical skills, research literacy, and structured essay writing.

  • Prepare GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly for national examinations using data-driven progress tracking, targeted exam technique coaching, and detailed diagnostic feedback.

  • Connect sociological theories and research methodologies directly to modern real-world events, policy developments, and local London community contexts to deepen cultural literacy and debate.

  • Monitor, track, and evaluate student progress, implementing targeted intervention strategies to stretch high-aspiring scholars while supporting developing learners.

  • Contribute positively to departmental enrichment, including student debate clubs, sociological field research projects, university masterclasses, and social policy workshops.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.

  • A strong academic degree in Sociology, Social Policy, Criminology, or a closely related Social Science discipline.

  • Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding Sociology teaching across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 (A-Level experience is highly desirable).

  • Thorough knowledge of national Sociology examination board specifications (e.g., AQA, OCR, Eduqas).

  • Superior classroom presence, inspiring questioning techniques, and an infectious passion for sociological research and student-led debate.

Salary & Benefits

  • Pay Scale: Inner London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Inner London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Key Stage 5 coordination or social research initiatives.

  • Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured onboarding for a seamless January transition, and access to staff health and wellbeing schemes.

How to Apply

If you are an ambitious, engaging Sociology specialist ready to make an immediate impact from January at an Outstanding secondary school in Newham, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your application as soon as possible for consideration.
