About our Team:
The Hybrid & Open Access Journals Editorial department is a vibrant and dynamic team of highly motivated individuals who are passionate about research and publishing. We are responsible for developing and growing a diverse portfolio of high-quality, valuable journals across the social sciences, STEM fields, and various business models to adapt to a changing market. Our collaborative efforts with external editors, society partners, and internal colleagues in editorial, marketing, and product innovation roles ensure the growth, success, and long-term sustainability of our program. Our friendly and welcoming team is dedicated to driving excellence and fostering a supportive environment.
Could you be our new Publishing Editor ? Are you?
- Interested in and committed to higher education and academic publishing?
- Experienced in running journals, ideally at an academic or scientific journal publisher?
- Able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the journal publication process and industry?
- A strong oral and written communicator, able to deliver presentations and share information confidently and clearly?
- An excellent relationship manager, ability to build positive collaborations with colleagues and external stakeholders?
- Able to manage a variety of projects within tight time pressures in a dynamic environment?
- Ability to identify, advise, and act appropriately on ethical or legal questions relating to publication? For example: publication misconduct, libel, or copyright.
- Proficient in standard IT packages, including Microsoft Office?
Your new role:
- Monitor the financial performance of journals in the assigned portfolio, maximising revenues and controlling costs.
- Implement activities with other departments and external partners to ensure action taken where necessary to make improvements to financial performance.
- Provide information and advice to journal editors and partner societies to help them improve the quality of content published in their journals.
- Compile and assess key data and metrics, using this data to inform recommendations on each journal’s development strategy.
- Lead journal editorial board meetings and represent Sage at conferences, where appropriate.
- Successfully negotiate editor and society contract renewals, produce profit and loss statements, prepare draft contracts and lead contract approval process through to contract signature.
- Liaise with other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs.
- Where required, be responsible for handling acquired titles from contract through to publication by Sage by coordinating with other departments to ensure necessary actions are completed on time.
- Support the Publisher / Senior Publisher / Team as required with departmental projects and tasks.
- Actively manage journal editor performance, establishing and implementing best practice regarding manuscript submission, peer review process, revision and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function.
