The postholder will support the Maternity Education Team in delivering high-quality education programmes and midwifery development initiatives. Working collaboratively with the Practice Development Midwife and the wider Maternity Education Team, the role focuses on ensuring that midwives receive appropriate educational support aligned with their evolving roles and responsibilities.

The role involves providing both educational and clinical support to midwifery staff across all clinical areas, contributing to the enhancement of patient care and professional practice. The postholder will also assist in delivering the Core Competency Framework, ensuring consistent standards of practice are maintained.

Additionally, the role supports the ongoing development of midwifery skills and knowledge, enabling staff to practice safely, effectively, and in line with current clinical standards.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the Maternity Education Team by participating in the delivery of education programmes and midwifery development programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with the Practice Development Midwife and the wider Maternity. Education Team to enable appropriate educational support for the changing role of midwives.
  • Provide educational and clinical support for midwifery staff in all clinical areas
  • Work alongside Practice Development Midwife in delivering the Core Competency Framework
  • Support the ongoing development of the skills and knowledge required for midwives to practice effectively.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Be highly visible in the clinical area and act as a resource for both staff and clients.
  • Promote high standards of care through role modelling the demonstration of clinical expertise, leadership and professionalism
  • Be aware of current evidence-based practice demonstrating this in own midwifery practice and help incorporate relevant research into the delivery of excellent midwifery care.
  • To work clinically alongside midwives where required across the organisation , supporting individual midwives to develop their practice
  • To be competent in a range of clinical skills: e.g. suturing, cannulation, CTG interpretation, intermittent auscultation, waterbirth and be able to teach these skills to others.
  • Contribute to an environment in which effective practice-based learning is fostered, implemented, evaluated and shared.
  • To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment.
  • To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for midwives and other staff.
  • To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the trust, ensuring effective communication at all times.
  • Be aware of themes and trends arising from clinical incidents and complaints and ensure these form part of the ongoing educational and development programmes within the service.

Education and Training

  • To facilitate the learning and continuing development of midwifery staff, ensuring that education is responsive to trust developments and national guidance around midwifery.
  • To help develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes and opportunities for midwives.
  • Ensure a conducive learning environment is provided and maintained for all learners.
  • Facilitate a positive learning environment in the classroom, simulation and clinical areas where staff development is encouraged and supported and talent is fostered and enhanced.
  • To support research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area.
  • Assist in teaching on statutory and trust mandated training, orientation and preceptorship programmes, ad hoc emergency skills drills etc.
  • Support staff in developing skills across the maternity setting.
  • To be part of the PROMPT faculty and contribute to other multidisciplinary training.
  • Assist PDM in ensuring education is responsive to service developments.

Leadership and Management

  • To manage own time to ensure balance between clinical teaching and administrative activities such as communication and lesson preparation.
  • Practice good education governance maintaining records and progress reports of staff supported clinically, preparing standardised lesson plans, maintaining training records and actively participating in evaluation of all teaching episodes and programmes.
  • Be involved with the collation of training statistics and reports as required for reporting locally/CQC/CNST.
  • To assist in the process of recruitment of pre-registration midwifery students for the partner universities and midwives within the trust.
  • To ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups.
  • To be an active member of the Trust’s Practice Development Forum and other forums for developing practice


Personal Professional Development

  • To actively participate in maintaining own professional development, identifying own educational and clinical training needs with Line Manager.
  • Participate in own appraisal.
  • To ensure own mandatory training certificates are current.
  • To maintain your own personal and professional development in accordance with revalidation requirements, attending mandatory study sessions as required.
  • To participate in reflective practice, and maintain a personal learning portfolio.
  • To keep up to date with NMC, relevant specialist, Faculty & Trust guidelines and protocols.
  • To maintain full conversance with current national and local guidance and the NMC standards.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC Registered Midwife
  • Practice Supervisor & Practice Assessor competency or equivalent

Desirable criteria
  • Current NLS certification
  • Completed or working towards qualification in High Dependency Care for Midwifery course
  • Completed or working towards qualification in Examination of the New-born course

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Confident and proficient in all key Midwifery skills e.g. perineal suturing, IV drug administration, cannulation, CTG interpretation, intermittent auscultation, water birth

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in a clinical setting
  • Experience as a Practice Supervisor and Assessor

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching on PROMPT or other in-house training
  • Experience in midwifery audit, research and quality monitoring processes
