Opinion and Insight commissioning editor (freelance)

Job Introduction
The i Paper is seeking an experienced Opinion and Insight commissioning editor on a freelance basis. The role requires working with established writers as well as our inhouse team, commissioning and editing insightful and impartial essays, reactive opinion and video.

 

You should have considerable experience of editing to a high standard. You will need a strong interest in domestic and world news and current affairs as well as an instinct for the nation's talking points. You will be based at The i Paper’s HQ in London with some flexibility for hybrid working.

Job specifications:

• To work with the Opinion and Insight team to originate creative, intelligent and insightful essays, reactive opinion and video
• To commission experienced writers, as well as discovering new creative talent
• To edit copy to a high standard and rewrite and restructure articles when needed
• To work with the audience team to understand what engages our readers
• To work closely with video, newsletter, social and search teams to understand what drives new audiences and engages subscribers
• To demonstrate a clear grasp of cross-platform publishing, and the opportunities if offers for Opinion journalism

Skills and experience:

• Strong copy editing and writing skills
• Experience of Opinion commissioning and editing
• Comprehensive understanding of what makes an opinion or analysis article stand out
• Strong news judgement – and an ability to spot news stories
• The ability to work to tight deadlines, under pressure
• A self-starter with thoughtful and imaginative ideas
• Two years’ experience on a national or major regional newsdesk or news website
• Understanding of SEO and how to use social media to promote stories is key
• Good knowledge of media law and The Editors’ Code of Practice (IPSO)
