Job overview

Band 7 Full time Fetal Surveillance and Wellbeing Specialist Midwife
11-Month Secondment Opportunity

Are you passionate about improving outcomes for women and babies through excellence in fetal surveillance? Do you have a keen interest in education, leadership, and supporting colleagues to develop their knowledge and skills?

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated midwife to join our established education team as a Fetal Surveillance and Wellbeing Specialist Midwife on an 11-month secondment. This is an excellent development opportunity for an experienced midwife looking to expand their leadership, educational, and quality improvement experience.

In this role, you will lead the delivery and evaluation of our fetal monitoring education programme, supporting staff across the multidisciplinary team to enhance clinical knowledge, competence, and decision-making in the assessment and management of fetal wellbeing. You will act as a clinical expert and role model, promoting evidence-based practice and contributing to improvements in safety, quality, and outcomes for women and babies.

This role would suit an individual with a strong interest in education, clinical governance, and service improvement who is looking to further develop their strategic and leadership skills within maternity services.

Informal discussions are welcomed and encouraged. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in this exciting development opportunity.

Main duties of the job

As the Fetal Surveillance and Wellbeing Senior Midwife, you will lead fetal monitoring education, training, competency assessment, and quality improvement activity across maternity services. You will develop and deliver multidisciplinary training programmes, support staff to achieve and maintain competency in fetal surveillance, and provide expert clinical advice to colleagues to promote safe and effective care.

You will play a key role in audit, governance, guideline development, incident review, and service improvement, helping to ensure that national standards and local objectives are achieved. Working closely with midwifery, obstetric, neonatal, governance, and education teams, you will promote a culture of learning, reflection, and continuous improvement.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced midwife with excellent clinical knowledge of fetal monitoring, strong leadership and teaching skills, and the ability to influence practice across multidisciplinary teams. You will be an effective communicator, passionate about education and staff development, and committed to improving outcomes and experiences for women, babies, and families.

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include. They shouldn’t however replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.
