EX2324 PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Build and operate the developer platforms, pipelines and templates that make BBC engineers faster, safer and more effective. Deliver paved roads, CI/CD and workflow automation that reduce friction, integrate Secure SDLC guardrails, and surface clear signals for Developer Experience measurement. Prioritise reliability, usability and low cognitive load. WHY JOIN THE TEAM Work where paved roads meet measurable impact. You’ll design CI/CD, templates and secure-by-default workflows used daily, operate to clear SLOs, instrument the platform for real signals, and pilot AI-assisted developer tools with sensible guardrails – all aimed at reducing friction and lifting flow. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT • Design, build and operate CI/CD platforms and reusable pipelines in Git-based workflows.
• Create and maintain templates, starter kits and golden paths for services, tests, packaging and deployment.
• Integrate secure-by-default controls – secrets hygiene, dependency management, code scanning and policy checks.
• Engineer artefact management at scale – versioning, provenance, SBOM and signing in the build and release flow.
• Instrument services and pipelines for metrics, logs and traces; expose meaningful signals and dashboards.
• Evaluate, pilot and integrate AI-assisted developer tools into everyday workflows with clear guardrails.
• Own reliability – monitoring, alerting, incident response and post-incident improvements; automate toil and plan deprecations and change comms.
• Partner with product teams to drive adoption and retire redundant tooling; manage cost and sustainability for the toolchain and compute. YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA • Proven delivery and operation of CI/CD and developer tooling at scale – strong Git workflows and pipeline-as-code.
• Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code and policy-as-code (e.g. CloudFormation, AWS CDK, Terraform) plus practical AWS experience.
• Strong engineering in at least one of Node.js, Python, Java – able to build reusable tools, CLI/Actions and templates.
• Artefact and dependency management expertise – registries, build promotion, SBOM and provenance in the release flow.
• Observability and operability – instrumentation, SLOs, alerting, incident handling and continuous improvement.
• Practical Secure SDLC integration – secrets management, dependency hygiene and gating checks that balance risk and speed.
• Excellent collaboration and communication – influence adoption through clarity and developer empathy. DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED • Experience with developer portals and inner-source contribution models.
• Trunk-based development and environment promotion strategies at scale.
• Exposure to DORA/SPACE or similar frameworks.
• Knowledge of container build and supply chain controls without over-indexing on orchestration.
• Experience running champions programmes and driving toolchain migrations. If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply. Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.
