Project Manager

Location: Ilford (Onsite)

Appointment Basis: Permanent

Salary: c.£70K + Benefits

Closing date: 15th December 2025

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time Project Manager to drive engineering excellence in Ilford, UK we're looking for?

Your Future Role

Are you an experienced Project Manager with a background in rail or complex industrial projects? This is your opportunity to take on a high-impact role in a sector that keeps Britain moving. At our Ilford site, we specialise in Heavy Maintenance and Asset Life Management covering modernisation, modification, refurbishment, overhauls, corrosion repair, exterior painting, and fleet operations support.

You’ll take ownership of multiple projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of safety and compliance. No two days will be the same; one day you’ll be driving cost efficiency and resource planning, the next you’ll be resolving technical challenges and aligning stakeholders.

This is a role for someone who thrives in a technical, regulated environment, brings strong project management expertise, and can confidently manage projects that directly impact rail operations.

We’ll look to you for the following:

  • Acting as the primary customer interface and managing relationships effectively.
  • Driving organic growth and managing Margin Enhancement Programmes (MEP) for opportunities on contracts (volume, product, or Variation Orders (VOs))
  • Full management of project profit and loss.
  • Defining customer demand profiles and balancing internal resources.
  • Resolving conflicts regarding priorities and issues.
  • Harmonising strategy across all internal stakeholders.
  • Maximising profitability by:
    (a) improving product offerings and securing additional revenue through Variation Orders (VOs),
    (b) reducing costs through identification of key drivers (price, consumption, volume).
  • Managing cash flow, including debt and inventory (Stock and Work in Progress (WIP)).
  • Identifying risks and opportunities and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Preparing project reports and representing projects at internal and customer reviews.

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Project Management experience.
  • Commercial management skills and techniques.
  • Solid foundation in engineering
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to drive others.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Awareness of finance, legal matters, and commercial considerations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Project Review Organisation (PRO) processes and tools.
  • Understanding of rail industry standards, products, and market dynamics.

Preferred Certifications:

  • PMP: Project Management Professional
  • APM: Project Management Qualification (PMQ) – Associated with the Association for Project Management.
  • PRINCE2: Projects In Controlled Environments (Foundation and Practitioner).
  • CAPM: Certified Associate in Project Management.
  • CPMP: Certified Project Management Practitioner.
  • Associate in Project Management.
  • IPMA: International Project Management Association.
  • MPM: Master Project Manager.
  • PPM: Professional in Project Management.

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues

  • Utilise our agile working environment
  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries
  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning

  • Up to 52 weeks full maternity and adoption pay
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the opportunity to buy or sell holiday
  • A wide range of flexible benefits that you can tailor to suit your lifestyle

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!
