Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic team. This role involves independent and unsupervised work, including participation in shift work and on-call systems. You will be responsible for the receipt, analysis, and reporting of specimens for pathological investigations, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, responsive services that meet UKAS and other regulatory standards, support junior staff through training and mentorship, and maintain meticulous records to foster a culture of quality.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform diagnostic laboratory tests and interpret results independently.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality in specimen analysis and reporting.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment in line with safety protocols.
  • Support junior staff through supervision and training.
  • Contribute to quality assurance, audit, and accreditation processes (e.g. UKAS).
  • Participate in continuous professional development and departmental meetings.
  • Communicate complex information clearly to colleagues and external contacts.

Job responsibilities

The Biomedical Scientist will provide a high-quality, efficient, and responsive diagnostic laboratory service. The role requires independent and unsupervised work, including participation in shift work and on-call systems. The post holder will be responsible for the receipt, analysis, and reporting of specimens for pathological investigations, ensuring accuracy and reliability. They will also mentor junior staff and contribute to continuous professional development and quality improvement initiatives.

The post holder will perform scientific and interpretive work in accordance with HCPC registration. They will validate and authorise diagnostic reports using professional judgment and ensure laboratory equipment is maintained and calibrated in line with safety protocols. All documentation and records must meet Trust and regulatory standards, and the individual will participate in internal and external quality assurance schemes. They will support the delivery of services that meet UKAS and other accreditation requirements, supervise and train junior staff, and contribute to research, audit, and service development activities. Effective communication with colleagues and external contacts is essential, as is promoting safe working practices and infection control compliance. The post holder will escalate concerns that may impact patient care in a timely manner.

Applicants must hold a Biomedical Science degree or equivalent that is acceptable by IBMS and HCPC. HCPC registration is required, along with a clear understanding of the HCPC Code of Conduct. Candidates should have either the IBMS Specialist Diploma or demonstrate equivalent depth of knowledge in the relevant discipline. A commitment to Continuing Professional Development is essential. The role requires strong practical analytical skills and interpretive ability at bench level. Applicants must be able to prioritise work and manage multiple tasks under pressure. Good IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and pathology systems, are necessary. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. An understanding of quality assurance and laboratory accreditation standards is also essential.
