Lead Data Engineer – Commercial & Marketing

The Role

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join our Commercial & Marketing data team, supporting a wide range of initiatives across customer acquisition, retention, CRM, campaign analytics, affiliate tracking, and regulatory reporting.

This role is vital in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and timely data to power key business functions. You will lead the development of batch, real-time, and event-driven data pipelines and play a central role in the team's technical direction, mentorship, and delivery excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines and solutions to support marketing and commercial needs including campaign delivery, customer segmentation, affiliate reporting, and activity tracking.
• Provide technical leadership in solution architecture, code quality, data modelling, testing practices, and performance optimization.
• Mentor and guide data engineers within the team while championing best practices for delivery, reliability, and automation.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across CRM, Marketing, Commercial, Data Science, and Platform teams to gather requirements and translate them into scalable data products.
• Lead end-to-end project delivery from requirements through to deployment, ensuring reliability, traceability, and compliance.
• Continuously improve data quality, observability, and system efficiency across the team's data landscape.
• Support the team's reporting infrastructure by enabling clean, timely, and accessible datasets for analytics and business intelligence.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technical evaluations of new tools, while driving innovation in our data platforms.

Technical Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a senior or lead data engineer in a commercial or marketing data environment.
• Strong background in cloud data platforms, with hands-on experience in data lake and data warehouse solutions.
• Proficient in SQL, data modelling, and working with structured and semi-structured data at scale.
• Strong programming skills in Python or Java, with experience building scalable ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Familiarity with orchestration and transformation tools such as Airflow or DBT, and version control and CI/CD practices.
• Experience with business intelligence and reporting platforms.
• Solid understanding of data integration patterns across marketing, CRM, and affiliate domains.
• Experience working with real-time/event-driven architectures and APIs.
• Ability to lead and influence technical direction while working collaboratively across teams.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with strong attention to data quality and performance.
