Arts and Media Reporter (maternity cover)
Fixed-term maternity contract Full-time, Tuesday to Saturday
Where do I work?
The Observer newsroom, London (22 Berners Street) plus flexibility to work remotely 1 day per week.
What are we for?
The Observer’ s promise is in the name: it makes journalism that bears witness. It loves food, design, fashion and ideas, both for their own sake and because they can change the way we live. It’s proudly progressive, but has no party allegiance. It’s open to different arguments and its editorial independence is non-negotiable. We are building a new Observer across print, audio and digital. We’re here to build journalism that lasts.
What’s the job?
Working with The Observer ’s experienced news team from Tuesday to Saturday, you will respond to the latest arts and media news with stories and insightful analysis across print, digital and audio platforms. You will also deliver exclusive content and interviews and speak regularly to a wide range of contacts across the cultural landscape.
This role offers the opportunity to write at length, as well as produce news stories on a quicker turnaround. You will also have the opportunity to work on long-term investigations and to contribute to The Observer ’s output of popular podcasts.
Key skills include:
Experience of producing national news and features with exceptional writing skills
Proven track record in delivering exclusive media and arts stories
Extensive knowledge of the creative and media business scene across the UK
Established contacts among practitioners and arts leaders and with broadcasters and publishers
A demonstrable love of the arts and broader culture in all its forms
Key responsibilities include:
Contributing ideas for stories each week as well as longer investigations and analysis
Developing and creating relationships with key figures across the arts and media sectors
Planning coverage of key performances, events and releases throughout the year
Working closely with other reporters and sections across the newsroom, including our social media and audio teams
Working with us
We are a progressive business with a diverse, motivated team; a mix of veterans and young people starting out on their careers. We are committed to equal opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for all our employees, and we welcome applicants regardless of ethnic origin, national origin, gender, race, colour, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age.
Benefits
30 days holiday + bank holidays
Private healthcare
Group income protection & life assurance
Pension
Cycle to Work scheme
Interest-free season ticket loan
Free snacks and drinks in the newsroom
Hybrid working (London newsroom + 1 day remote flexibility)
Our Process
We aim to run our interview process at pace and with clarity at every stage, recognising how challenging it can be to balance alongside other commitments or interviews. The number of stages will vary depending on the nature and level of the role, but we see this as a two-way process and hope you’ll enjoy the opportunity to meet a range of potential future colleagues.
