In collaboration with Dementia UK, Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) is looking to recruit an innovative and motivated registered nurse with a passion for, and experience in, providing relationship-centred dementia care to join our Dementia and Delirium Team as an Admiral Nurse.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative NMC-registered nurse (Adult, Mental Health, or Learning Disability) with a passion for relationship-centred dementia care to join our Dementia and Delirium Team as an Admiral Nurse.

In this specialist Band 7 role, you will:

  • Provide expert one-to-one support for people with dementia and their families

  • Deliver and coordinate high-quality, evidence-based dementia care across the hospital

  • Lead initiatives to improve patient and carer experience throughout hospital stays and transitions

  • Provide training and act as a role model to support best practice in dementia care across PRUH

You will be supported by Dementia UK to develop professionally through the Admiral Nurse Competency Framework, postgraduate education, and the wider Admiral Nurse network.

Applicants should have substantial post-registration experience in dementia care (including in acute settings) and postgraduate dementia-specific training or education.

Main duties of the job

The Admiral Nurse will lead, deliver, and coordinate relationship-centred dementia care to improve the experience of carers and families affected by dementia with complex needs during the acute stay and transitions of care within operational areas of Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).

In line with the Admiral Nurse Competency Framework at an enhanced specialist level, the post holder will provide:

  • Specialist bio-psychosocial assessment and support for people with dementia and families with complex needs
  • Facilitation of education and training for staff in the delivery of evidence-based dementia care
  • Clinical leadership in policy development and quality improvement
  • Consultancy to other health and social care professionals regarding dementia

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership on evidence-based approaches to care that meet the needs of people with a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of dementia, as well as their carers, families, and staff.
  • Lead the care of people with dementia and their carers/families who have complex care needs, from peri-diagnosis through to post-bereavement support.
  • Conduct specialist nursing assessments using the Admiral Nurse Assessment Framework for carers and families affected by dementia during hospital admission.
  • Deliver a range of bio-psychosocial interventions to promote health and wellbeing for people with dementia and their carers/families.
  • Work collaboratively with health, social, and voluntary sector services to ensure coordinated care.
  • Act as an advocate for people with dementia and their carers/families, promoting their rights and best interests.
  • Participate in and lead case conferences and best interest meetings when required.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues to provide support and information to families, particularly around advance care planning, best interest decisions, and end-of-life care.
  • Support the audit and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing dementia care delivery within Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), where appropriate to the role.
  • Facilitate and support the development and delivery of innovative dementia training and education to staff at all levels within the Trust, improving competence and confidence in line with best practice and guidance.
  • Participate in and/or lead formal training events promoting best practice in dementia care and disseminating Admiral Nursing work.
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership and mentorship, acting as a clinical role model in the delivery of evidence-based dementia care within PRUH.
  • Advise on and support the development and delivery of work streams as part of the Trust’s Dementia Strategy.
  • Work proactively with key local and national stakeholders to develop integrated care pathways and holistic models of care through dissemination of specialist skills and knowledge.
  • Lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures at PRUH to improve identification, assessment, ongoing support, and effective discharge for people with dementia and their family carers.
  • Collect and review quantitative and qualitative data, as agreed, to evaluate and audit the Admiral Nurse Service and recommend improvements.
  • Undertake analysis and evaluation, providing recommendations to the PRUH Dementia Strategy Group or similar bodies.
  • Ensure information and data recorded is relevant, accurate, complete, and documented contemporaneously.
  • Develop personal competence through use of the Admiral Nurse Competency Framework and portfolio development, utilizing resources provided by Dementia UK.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RN/RNMH/RNLD)
  • Postgraduate qualification in relevant field, or evidence of specialist training/education within the field of dementia equivalent to this level
  • Evidence of continued professional development/training in relevant areas, including dementia and leadership
  • Commitment to continued professional and practice development

Desirable criteria
  • Further specialist training/education within the field of dementia equivalent to a Masters levels

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of facilitating and delivering training/ development of staff
  • Experience of: • completing holistic nursing assessments • providing bio-psychosocial interventions • working as an autonomous practitioner • professional supervision and development/mentoring of staff • audit/evaluation of clinical practice • collaborative/multi-agency working
