Caretaker | Community Secondary School | Hounslow
CORE PURPOSE
We require a practical, reliable Caretaker to support the day-to-day operational upkeep, security, and cleanliness of our school campus. Operating within a supportive facilities team, the successful candidate will carry out essential maintenance, security routines, porterage duties, and statutory compliance checks to ensure a safe, functional environment for students, staff, and visitors.
THE SCHOOL
An 11–16 community secondary school located in the London Borough of Hounslow, West London. The school operates with a centralized behaviour system managed by the senior leadership team to maintain a quiet, structured, and respectful environment across the campus. The estates team works collaboratively, using digital task logging tools to ensure work is distributed fairly and facilities requests are managed efficiently during standard operating hours.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Site Security & Access: Manage daily opening and locking-up procedures, ensuring all facilities, windows, and perimeter gates are secure, and setting intruder alarms.
General Maintenance & Repairs: Perform first-line general maintenance, painting, basic carpentry, plumbing repairs, and unblocking fixtures to keep school facilities in excellent condition.
Statutory Compliance Checks: Complete routine health and safety checks, including weekly fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and water temperature monitoring (legionella flushing), recording data in digital compliance logs.
Porterage & Setup: Handle heavy lifting, movement of furniture, delivery distribution, and setting up halls and classrooms for assemblies, examinations, and evening community events.
Litter & Grounds Upkeep: Oversee basic campus grounds cleanliness, ensuring walkways, play areas, and entrances remain free of hazards, litter, and adverse weather risks (salting pathways in winter).
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: A basic health and safety or manual handling certificate is desirable. A full, clean UK driving license is advantageous.
Experience: Practical experience in caretaking, general DIY, building maintenance, or site operations, preferably within a school or community facility setting.
Skills: Strong practical handyperson skills, self-motivation, good communication with school staff and visitors, and a reliable, flexible working style.
REGIONAL CONTEXT
Local Area & Community: Based in the bustling West London borough of Hounslow, the school serves a vibrant and culturally diverse local community. The borough offers a rich blend of historic riverside neighbourhoods, commercial centres, and expansive public parks like Syon Park and Boston Manor Park, supported by engaged local families.
Transport & Commuting: The school benefits from exceptional regional transport connections, situated with rapid road access via the A4 (Great West Road), A316, and M4 motorway corridor. Public transit options are extensive, with comprehensive local bus networks, direct Heathrow Express/National Rail connections, and Piccadilly Line Underground services via stations such as Hounslow Central, Hounslow East, and Feltham, offering fast routes into Central London and surrounding areas.
