We are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable & motivated Lead Nurse to lead, develop, contribute and influence the surgical nursing care . Possessing exceptional interpersonal, communication, operational and organisational skills is essential. Demonstrate a supportive and flexible leadership approach and a responsible attitude to promote confidence in the team/service.
Bringing with you a proven track record of outstanding team leadership in your current role combined with senior operational and tactical care delivery. Having an in depth understanding of surgical staffing, terminology, interventions & care delivery. Having achieved a specialist course in surgical/trauma nursing or equivalent as well as a Mentorship qualification or equivalent, holding a degree in Nursing and considering working towards a Master’s qualification (or experience equivalent in a senior role). Using this knowledge and skills to support and lead the nursing team, taking into consideration the implications of the social, economic and diverse context of healthcare, including the assessment and management of risk.

A key part of the role will be developing, delivering and supporting a compassionate culture of care and leadership within the service.
Main duties of the job
• To ensure that the Care group is fully aware of the Trust Major Incident Plan and has full understanding of its role within this.
• To have management responsibility of site specific Matrons and Clinical Nurse Specialists.
• To be responsible for the key quality indicators within the Care Group
• To be responsible for budget management of the nursing workforce
• To develop cost reduction, income generation and efficiency proposals as required and implement them successfully
• To be responsible for regular workforce review based on the changing needs of the service and the organisation
• To develop this group of staff to reach their full potential and provide regular and constructive feedback, including the annual appraisal.
• To be responsible for ensuring the Health and Safety measures are implemented and adhered to.
• To lead in the implementation of HR policies and participate in formal procedures as requested by the Head of Nursing.
• To assist the Head of Nursing in implementing new policies and service developments within the division.
• Facilitate the cascade of information ensuring awareness of division, Trust and NHS initiatives, supporting staff discussion and responding to feedback.
• To provide appropriate counselling and advice to staff in line with the Trust’s disciplinary and sickness procedures and to participate in the disciplinary procedure at an appropriate level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• To personally adhere to and uphold the NMC Professional Code of Conduct and competencies at all times.
• To provide timely, efficient and effective operational management support for surgical services, assisting the Head of Nursing, Clinical Director and General Manager to ensure that these services are responsive, innovative and provided to the highest possible standard.
• The Surgery Lead Nurse is a key member of the management team, responsible for assisting the Head of Nursing with the development and delivery of clinical and professional standards and the development of nursing leadership within the Care Group.

• The post holder will work in line with agreed objectives reflecting the targets, quality standards, resource controls and constraints and will contribute to delivering the management strategy of patient services within the Care group.
• The Surgery Lead Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe and effective care and for the support and management of the Matrons and professional lead for the Clinical Nurse Specialists. They will represent the specialism both locally and nationally, promoting an evidence-based approach to care.
• The Surgery Lead Nurse will lead and influence with care and compassion and support the surgical mental health and well-being agenda.
Person specification
Essential on application & in Interview
Essential criteria
- Higher professional or management degree masters level. Working towards MSc or equivalent extensive senior leadership experience.
- Demonstrable evidence of managing risk and governance.
- Demonstrable evidence of nursing leadership.
- Demonstrable evidence of working across Divisional, professional and organisational boundaries.
- Proven ability to manage and deliver complex and changing workload, which will include the need to identify and resolve conflicting priorities within tight timescales.
- Proven track record as a change agent
- Experience of writing Nursing service/strategy.
- Evidence of ability to manage within a financial limit
- Proven management skills demonstrated by successful resource management in a changing environment with a direct approach to problem solving, which reflects reality, requiring an effective and co-operative personal leadership style
- A clinical expert either through formal qualification (diploma/degree) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to the area.
- NMC Level 1 or Level 15 Registered Nurse
Desirable criteria
- MBA or other management qualification.
