Lectureship in Earth Sciences

UCL
London
About us

UCL Earth Sciences is one of the oldest centres for earth and planetary sciences in the UK, situated in Bloomsbury in the heart of London. The Department is housed in the refurbished Kathleen Lonsdale Building (inaugurated by Sir David Attenborough in April 2018). The completion of this £28M project means that we have modern teaching laboratories now co-located with our research laboratories.

UCL Earth Sciences has a student body comprising over 300 undergraduates, 30 taught graduate students and 50 research students. The Department has around 35 members of academic and teaching staff, together with 25 research staff, supported by a highly-skilled professional service and technical team.

Throughout our community we actively promote an equitable, diverse and inclusive working environment for everyone. The Department supports a range of staff and student networks, mentoring, training, career development, and flexible working arrangements.

About the role

We are offering a full-time permanent academic post at Lecturer level (Grade 8) in Earth Sciences. The specific research of the successful candidate should complement our existing strengths. Research areas include the climate crisis, hydrogeology, sustainable resources, the energy transition, natural hazards, and planetary science .

UCL Earth Sciences has a strong tradition of research; our experimental laboratories host a broad range of equipment designed to study many aspects of Earth Sciences, supported by experienced and knowledgable technical staff, together with access to high-performance computing facilities. We expect the successful applicant to embed themselves within our community to realise their own ambitious research programme. The appointed person will build links across the Department and throughout UCL more widely.

About you

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research of international quality, and show academic leadership potential, with the aim of becoming a future leader in their subject area. It is also expected that the post-holder will contribute to all aspects of academic life in the Department and College.

Candidates will have a PhD, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate discipline (must have been awarded by the time of application), and expert knowledge and expertise in any area of climate crisis, hydrogeology, sustainable resources, the energy transition, natural hazards, or planetary science. This should be evidenced by a strong publication record and/or other indicators of academic reputation.

Teaching experience on university level courses or modules is essential, as is the knowledge, skills and desire to independently lead a program of research at UCL.
