Waltham Forest, Greater London

Teacher of Art & Visual Culture (January 2027 Start)

Location: Waltham Forest, East/Outer London

School Type: Secondary School & Sixth Form (Co-educational)

Contract: Full-Time, Permanent or Fixed-Term

Start Date: January 2027 (Winter Term Start)

An ambitious, culturally vibrant secondary school and Sixth Form in the East London Borough of Waltham Forest is seeking an articulate, creative, and dynamic Teacher of Art to join their expressive Visual Arts faculty this January . Situated in a borough renowned for its rich artistic heritage, creative studios, and vibrant community arts scene, this mid-year appointment offers an outstanding opportunity for a dedicated Art specialist, whether an experienced practitioner eager to guide A-Level Fine Art and Graphic Communication portfolios or an ambitious Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire visual literacy, artistic experimentation, and technical mastery across a high-aspiring student body.

About the Role

Stepping into the department for the January term, you will guide students through practical studio work, art history, digital media, and contextual analysis. Joining a collaborative, highly creative team, you will deliver compelling, high-rigor lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Art, Craft & Design / Graphic Communication), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Fine Art / Photography / Art & Design), equipping young artists with the observational skills, critical thinking, and portfolio depth needed for prestigious art foundation courses and creative industry pathways.

  • Environment: A modern Outer London secondary campus featuring light-filled art studios, printmaking facilities, ceramics machinery, digital media suites (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud), and dedicated gallery exhibition spaces

  • Culture: A supportive, expressive learning environment focused on practical skills, diverse artistic traditions, student portfolio development, and active engagement with East London’s local creative networks

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-impact, practical Art and Design lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 covering drawing, painting, 3D media, printmaking, digital design, and contextual art history.

  • Guide GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly through component portfolio completion and externally set assignments, providing structured guidance on annotation, experimentation, and final outcome execution.

  • Maintain a vibrant, safe, and organized studio environment that encourages independent creative risk-taking while adhering to health and safety standard procedures.

  • Monitor, track, and evaluate student progress systematically, offering targeted feedback to stretch ambitious young artists aiming for top art universities and conservatoires while scaffolding core technical skills for developing learners.

  • Contribute actively to departmental enrichment, including student art exhibitions, community gallery projects, national art competitions, and museum/gallery study visits.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching qualification.

  • A strong academic degree in Fine Art, Visual Communication, Art History, Design, or a closely related creative discipline.

  • Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding Art instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level Fine Art or Graphic Communication teaching capability is highly desirable).

  • Strong personal artistic portfolio, practical mastery across diverse media, and thorough working knowledge of national examination board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).

  • Excellent classroom presence, strong visual communication skills, and an infectious enthusiasm for visual culture, studio practice, and student expression.

Salary & Benefits

  • Pay Scale: Outer London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Outer London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Key Stage 4/5 Art Coordination, Exhibition & Gallery Lead, or Creative Arts Lead.

  • Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured middle leadership mentoring, studio access, and staff health and wellbeing programs.

How to Apply

If you are an ambitious Art specialist ready to make an immediate impact this January at a dynamic secondary school in Waltham Forest, we encourage you to apply promptly. Please submit your application form, CV, and a digital portfolio sample (or link) for consideration.
