About the Role - 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant (Autism)
We are looking for a calm, emotionally resilient, and dependable 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 9 student with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). This is a highly rewarding opportunity to provide meaningful, personalised support to a young person navigating both emotional and academic challenges.
You will be working closely with the student throughout the school day, helping them to manage transitions, re-engage with learning after moments of distress, and build belief in their own ability. The role requires a patient and supportive approach, with a focus on flexibility, encouragement, and consistency.
Key Responsibilities - 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant
- Working 1:1 with a Year 9 pupil with Autism and emotional regulation needs
- Supporting the student through periods of dysregulation and facilitating calm, safe refocusing
- Encouraging positive self-image, resilience, and flexible thinking
- Assisting with lesson transitions and maintaining engagement with tasks
- Providing additional in-class support to other students with SEND as needed
- Participating in a two-week induction starting Monday, 7th July, leading into a long-term role from September 2025
Person Specification - 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant
We are looking for a dedicated, caring individual who is committed to supporting young people with Autism and complex needs. Previous experience is welcomed but not essential - more important are your consistency, emotional intelligence, and willingness to learn.
- Some experience working with children or young people with SEN, Autism, or emotional needs - ideal
- Calm, patient, and emotionally intelligent approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Confidence supporting emotional and behavioural needs in a trauma-informed setting
- Proactive, adaptable, and team-oriented mindset
- Demonstrates patience and adaptability with a readiness to take initiative and engage in relevant training
- Values reliability, punctuality, and consistency - essential traits in building trust and structure for the pupil
- Has a genuine interest in working with children long-term, with ambitions in education, SEND, youth work, or related fields (e.g. teaching, SENDCO, Educational Psychologist)
