QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

To hold an appropriate Environmental Health Registration Board approved academic qualification – an MSc, BSc (Hons) or Diploma in Environmental Health.

To hold EHORB Certificate of Registration.

Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

To hold corporate or chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (MCIEH or FCIEH) or

Passed CIEH Assessment of Professional Competence (including deemed compliance via grandfather rights) or Assessment of Professional Development or

Permanent discharge of duties beyond those associated with the role of an EHO (e.g. assuming the role of a student training manager).

To hold a current driving licence

We are looking for an Environmental Health Officer (EHO), initially for six months, to join Hackney Council’s Environmental Health team. The successful candidate will mainly be required to carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections of low risk categories of businesses. Some experience of enforcing health & safety legislation will be highly desirable.

We need someone who can out low risk category (C to E) Food Hygiene and corresponding Food Standards inspections, and can build effective working relationships with our diverse communities and other internal and external stakeholders. You will have good communication skills and be able to negotiate sensitive issues in a professional manner. The appointed practitioner will be someone with an eye for detail who understands the importance of accurate record keeping and effective administrative systems.

You will need an appropriate Environmental Health qualification and have evidence of meeting the current FSA FLCoP Competency Framework. You have demonstrable experience in a similar role, you are someone who can work on their own initiative and is self driven and motivated by outcomes would thrive in this role.

Successful candidates will have the option to work from home for completing paperwork etc

A suitably qualified Food Safety Officer who has similar experience and skills as above will also be considered for the post.

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

● Authorised to enforce the full range of Environmental Health and ancillary legislation allocated to the service unit.

● To contribute to the development, maintenance and promotion of the Council’s policies on equal opportunities and the development of good staff and community relations. Undertake outreach work with communities and where behaviours exist that impact upon communities seek to change these behaviours utilising a range of intervention types including but not limited to engagement, notices, seizure and ultimately prosecution action.

● To carry out work associated with corporate quality and initiatives as directed, developing policy and practice along with new systems and work procedures.

● Seek to raise compliance through adopting a collaborative partnership approach with businesses seeking prevention and compliance building opportunities.

● To report on issues affecting the area for which the post holder is responsible, to public meetings, working parties etc. and attend those meetings as required.

● To generally assist and support field staff from all disciplines in the discharge of their duties, providing guidance and support to colleagues and subordinates.

● To keep records and make returns either manually or electronically as directed.

● To acquire and apply specialist knowledge in a significant area of service delivery, taking responsibility for keeping up to date with developments, and providing training and guidance to colleagues.

● To communicate in a confident and assertive manner that is in line with established policies, practises and priorities of the Council and

maintains and enhances its credibility. To communicate in a way which meets the needs of a diverse audience and in a way that influences effectively

● To liaise at a senior level with Council Officers and outside organisations on matters for which the post holder is responsible

● To keep records and make statistical and other returns in the form prescribed and the frequency required. To use manual and computer-based record systems as necessary.

● To take the lead role on projects from inception to conclusion using project management techniques.

● To prepare detailed reports and/or briefing documents recommending defined courses of action.
