Operations Engineer - Broadcast Support

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £45,000 - £50,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Based at the BBC headquarters in London, you will join a highly skilled team of Broadcast Engineers, providing 24/7/365 frontline support for hundreds of TV, Radio & Music recording studios, edit suites, digital production systems, and a wide range of underpinning technologies and infrastructure. You will play a vital role in ensuring that broadcast equipment and facilities are maintained, safe and available to productions teams creating content for TV, Radio and Online platforms. The team supports multiple sites in London and numerous international offices. No single Engineer can know it all though, which is why teamwork and collaboration are essential, along with excellent communication skills. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT As a Broadcast Engineer, you’ll be on the frontline, responsible for delivering high-quality, rapid response support to ensure that equipment and systems used to create, capture, manipulate and distribute BBC content meets targets for availability, performance and safety. You will be expected to: • Resolve complex faults under pressure, demonstrating strong and wide-ranging technical skills and knowledge.
• Diagnose and repair faulty broadcast equipment, including electronic and mechanical systems, to restore service quickly and effectively.
• Utilise monitoring tools and diagnostic equipment effectively.
• Manage incidents and work queues proactively using service management tools.
• Create and maintain detailed technical documentation and knowledge entries.
• Conduct inspection and testing of electrical equipment and installations.
• Understand the needs of the business and the pressures faced by production teams, and communicate technical issues clearly with people at all levels.
• Collaborate widely with other teams, stakeholders and third parties. YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE • Degree or BTEC (HND) in Electronics, Broadcast Engineering or related technical field is preferred.
• Strong analytical and fault-finding skills.
• Proven ability to repair electronic and mechanical faults on a wide range of broadcast and studio equipment.
• Experience with graphics systems (e.g., VizRT) and editing software solutions.
• Familiarity with studio automation systems.
• Experience using incident and knowledge management tools. ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: 1. Proven engineering experience of supporting broadcast systems in live TV, Radio, or multimedia environments.
2. Considerable experience of diagnosing and fixing technically complex problems across a variety of broadcast systems.
3. Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of audio and video broadcast systems, including both analogue and digital platforms.
4. Awareness of all aspects of Health and Safety, particularly competence in electrical safety in broadcast environments, including inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
5. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical issues to a wide range of audiences using appropriate tools and techniques. DESIRED : • Good knowledge of networking, AoIP, Dante, MADI and diagnostic tools (e.g., Wireshark).
• Experience with robotic systems.
• Familiarity with remote access support using VPN, MSTSC, iLO and VMware.
• Working knowledge of DAW software used in production.
• Willingness to travel internationally if required.
