Workflow Developer
Job Description
Overview
The Workflow Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and continually improving workflows, automations, and integrations across the firm’s core business systems — including case management and finance platforms. The role ensures that processes are efficient, reliable, and aligned with legal‑sector best practices.
Working closely with business stakeholders, the Workflow Developer translates operational needs into robust, secure, and well‑documented technical solutions that support high‑quality legal service delivery and contribute to the firm’s wider digital strategy.
The firm operates a hybrid agile working policy allowing employees to work from home (or another UK location) for up to 50% of their time. Individuals can also apply for other flexible working options either at the time of recruitment or during the course of their employment. The ability to occasionally travel to other firm locations for project work or system rollouts is desirable as well as participating in planned evening/weekend releases where required (with notice).
Responsibilities
Workflow & Systems Engineering
- Develop, configure, and maintain workflows across case management, practice management, and finance systems to support efficient legal and business operations.
- Create SQL queries, stored procedures, scripts, views, and data routines to support workflow logic, reporting, and system optimisation.
- Design integrations between systems using APIs, REST services, and approved integration tools.
- Implement development standards, version control practices, and technical documentation aligned with firm‑wide governance.
Business Engagement & Requirements
- Work closely with legal teams, Finance, and Business Services to gather and analyse requirements.
- Translate business needs into clear technical specifications with documented acceptance criteria.
- Communicate complex technical topics in a clear, structured, and accessible way to non‑technical users.
- Support stakeholders through prototyping, demonstrations, user training, and change adoption.
Governance, Quality & Operational Excellence
- Ensure workflow changes follow the firm’s change control and release processes.
- Maintain accurate, audit‑ready documentation for all customisations, integrations, and data flows.
- Participate in problem reviews and root‑cause analysis where workflows or data issues are involved.
- Ensure solutions are secure, resilient, and compliant with legal‑sector data handling standards and GDPR.
Data, Automation & Integrations
- Analyse end‑to‑end data flows across business systems and recommend improvements for performance, accuracy, and reliability.
- Build and manage automations using integration platforms or low‑code tools (e.g., Power Automate, Boomi, or equivalent).
- Optimise existing workflows and identify opportunities for innovation, simplification, or automation.
Projects, Testing & Release Management
- Contribute to project planning, providing technical input on workflow impacts, effort estimates, and release sequencing.
- Develop and execute test plans (unit, integration, UAT support) to ensure robust delivery.
- Prepare and deliver handover documentation to IT Support, ensuring readiness for BAU operation.
- Support rollout plans including communication, user guidance, and training coordination.
Third‑Party Coordination & Vendor Management
- Collaborate with external suppliers on enhancements, defect resolution, updates, and technical troubleshooting.
- Ensure supplier-delivered work complies with firm standards, development principles, and security requirements.
- Monitor vendor performance and escalate issues where required.
Risk, Security & Compliance
- Ensure workflows and system enhancements uphold confidentiality, GDPR, and legal services data governance standards.
- Implement secure development practices including least‑privilege design, validated integrations, and audit‑ready logging.
- Support Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery considerations for critical workflows.
Essential & Desirable Criteria
We are looking for someone who is;
- Customer‑centric, proactive in understanding user needs and improving system usability.
- Structured, methodical approach with keen attention to detail and documentation quality.
- Curious, innovative, and motivated to seek improvements and adopt modern tools.
