  • To s upport and work in conjunction with Vascular Access T eam in the delivery of inpatient and ambulatory vascular access services, Cross Site.

  • To liaise with multi-professional colleagues to effect the timely and appropriate delivery of vascular access services .

  • To assist in the preparation of clinical equipment to assist the vascular access specialist nurse.

  • To help to maintain equipment stock levels under the supervision of the vascular access specialist nurse.

  • Provide information and advice patients, relatives, and carers re: intravascular access within the scope of the Vascular Access Support Practitioner’s role .

  • To perform such administrative task as delegated by the Lead Vascular Access Team with in the scope of the post holder for the provision of serve.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

  • Identify the boundaries of the Vascular Access Support Practitioner’s role and work within these limits .

  • Identify personal learning requirements .

  • Work as part of a team and be sensitive to others personal beliefs and preferences.

  • Participate in yearly Performance and Development Reviews

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. CLINICAL PRACTICE

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of infection control standards and promote these within the Trust adhering to the IPC Policy at all times.

  • To establish effective communication with all discipl ines, patients, and relatives.

  • In conjunction with other specialist clinical staff, to undertake monitoring and evaluation of standards of care of patients.

  • To participate in an audit programme of line care linked with the line practitioner team at Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospital to feed into the clinical governance system, under the guidance of the Lead Vascular Access CNS.

  • To assist in the delivery of a seamless service through Multidisciplinary Team processes and communication.

  • To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service .

  1. EDUCATION

  • To perform other administrative tasks related to intravascular training as needed.

  • In partnership with other members of the Vascular Access T eam and based on analysis of the relevant Saving Lives High Impact Interventions , determine educational needs to supp ort the Vascular Access S ervice.

  • In partnership with members of the Infection Prevention and Control team, to use the root cause analysis of bacteraemia to identify areas of poor practice and training needs with respect to intravascular lines.

  1. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • T o practice in accordance with the appropriate Tr ust and statutory guidelines.

  • To take responsibility for own professional development and clinical update in conjunction with the Team ’s perf ormance appraisal initiative.

  1. GENERAL

  • The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabiliti es associated with this post.

  • To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to p atients and staff.

  • To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development.

These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Care certificate
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Health or in Health & Social Care or equivalent technician or science qualification.

Desirable criteria
  • Basic computer skills, including working with EPIC
  • GCE, GCSEs particularly in English and Maths.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working in clinical settings

Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the role of a Vascular Access Support Practitioners skills.
  • Experience of cannulation and venepuncture
