Role Overview

A thriving and forward-thinking secondary school in Merton is seeking a skilled and proactive Design & Technology (DT) Technician to join their vibrant Design & Technology Department ASAP. Supporting practical teaching across Key Stages 3 to 5, you will play a vital role in setting up workshops, maintaining machinery and hand tools, managing materials, and ensuring robust health and safety standards across Resistant Materials, Product Design, Graphics, or Engineering areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, set up, and maintain materials, machinery, and equipment required for practical DT lessons and project work across KS3–KS5.

• Maintain workshops, preparation rooms, and teaching spaces to ensure a safe, tidy, and fully functional learning environment.

• Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on tools, machinery (e.g., bandsaws, lathes, sanders, pillar drills), and CAD/CAM equipment (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters).

• Ensure strict adherence to school health and safety guidelines, CLEAPSS regulations, and COSHH standards.

• Manage stock inventory for timber, plastics, metals, and general workshop consumables, placing stock orders and tracking deliveries.

• Assist teaching staff during practical lessons and provide direct technical support or guidance to students using machinery where appropriate.

Key Requirements

• Qualification: Qualification | Institution | Dates (e.g., NVQ / HNC in Design, Engineering, Carpentry, or relevant Technical Qualification | Awarding Institution | Year)

• Hands-on experience working with hand tools, power tools, workshop machinery, and CAD/CAM equipment.

• Previous experience as a school DT Technician or a background in carpentry, joinery, model making, or engineering (desirable).

• Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations within a workshop environment (CLEAPSS/DATA training desirable).

• Excellent organizational skills, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

• Legal right to work in the UK.
