Staff Engineer

Funding Circle UK
London

Description

Staff Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Staff Engineer with an excellent track record of technical leadership for our Product Engineering team.

The role sits within our Short Term Credit Engineering Group, leading the area responsible for the cutting-edge platform our customers use to apply and manage their credit products. Staff Engineers are amongst the most senior leaders we have within our Technology function and as such are responsible for raising the bar and enabling us to achieve the incredible.

Who are we?

We’re Funding Circle. We back small businesses to succeed.

At Funding Circle, we believe the world needs small businesses. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to help them get the finance they need to grow.

With more than a decade of expertise under our belt, we’ve built a game-changer of a platform with cutting-edge data and technology that’s reshaping the landscape of SME lending. Say goodbye to lengthy applications and hello to lightning-fast decisions! In just minutes, SMEs across the UK can get a decision, giving them access to competitive funding in a flash.

We know that good business is about good people. So we pride ourselves on providing meaningful, human support as well as fast, hassle free processes to deliver an unbeatable customer experience.

The role

  • You collaborate with product leadership early to understand the business goals and shape the technical direction to deliver on it. You translate this into a target system and data architecture with clear milestones to iterate towards it.

  • You have strong technical documentation skills and are able to write clear and thorough technical designs and standards.

  • You have high standards, drive continuous improvement, and take others on the journey to be even better.

  • You actively coach Lead Engineers, giving them feedback on their solutions, and guardrails for making decisions. You play an important part in their personal development through mentorship and are a role model for aspiring Staff Engineers.

  • You are able to perform deep-dives and troubleshoot issues in a hands-on capacity, but you seek to enable the teams rather than becoming a dependency for future issues.

  • You have excellent stakeholder-management skills and can present technology solutions, risks and tradeoffs to any audience across Funding Circle, demonstrating the ability to influence without requiring reporting authority to do so.

  • You take accountability for high-level solution design and technology decisions within your Group.

  • You will have sound commercial acumen and a solid understanding of how tech drives the top and bottom line. Your impact is connected to customer and commercial outcomes.

  • You represent Funding Circle externally at events, leveraging your network to share industry trends and insight, as well as attracting talent to Funding Circle.

What we’re looking for

  • A curious mindset and an ability to continuously improve the Technology function

  • An engineering leader who can lead on solving high-level problems, whilst also deep-diving into technical challenges in a hands-on capacity

  • Strong technical documentation skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Experience in at least one major Programming language (e.g. Python, Ruby, Java)

  • A strong fundamental programmer (data structures, algorithms)

  • Familiar with developing on Unix/Linux

  • Knowledgeable of Agile, Scrum, BDD, TDD and CI/CD

  • Experienced in delivering mission-critical, high-value products, and services.

At Funding Circle we are committed to building diverse teams so please apply even if your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with the requirements.

Want to learn more?

  • We have a huge impact on the businesses that borrow through our platform, the communities they serve and the overall economy (last year £7.2bn of GDP generated). You can read our full Impact Report here:https://www.fundingcircle.com/uk/impact

Why join us?

At Funding Circle, we celebrate and support the differences that make you, you. We’re proud to be an equal-opportunity workplace and affirmative-action employer. We truly believe that diversity makes us better.

As a flexible-first employer we offer hybrid working at Funding Circle, and we've long believed in a 'best of both' approach to in-office collaboration and non-office days. We expect our teams to be in our London office two times a week, where you can take advantage of our newly refurbished hybrid working space, barista made coffee and subsidised lunches (via JustEat) every day!

We back our Circlers to build their own incredible career, making a difference to small businesses every day. Our Circler proposition is designed to support employees both in and out of work, and it is anchored around four pillars: Health, Wealth, Development & Lifestyle.

A few highlights:
