We currently have an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking, proactive and highly motivated Porter within our Day Surgery Unit for a part- time (15hrs/week) contract.
You will be working on a busy day Surgery Unit Reception based at Ashford Hospital and will be the first point of contact for patients and medical staff.
For this role you will need to be organised and have the ability to deal with busy clinics and demanding situations.

Main duties of the job
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team by supporting all the professional staff in the Day Surgery Unit and Main Theatres, giving assistance when required to surrounding areas to always give and maintain a high-quality patient care
To ensure good working relationships with all other departments and users of the services.
Under the direct supervision and leadership of professional staff, the Porter/HCA will act as a support to the DSU and Theatre Teams. The post holder will be responsible for providing a high-quality support under the supervision of qualified members of the Team for patients in the Day Surgery Unit and Main Theatres

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
COMMUNICATION:
1. Communicate with patients in a relative, sensitive and appropriate manner.
2. Communicate effectively with all members of the Day Surgery Unit and Main Theatre teams.
3. Ensure confidentiality of patient information at all times.
4. Communicate to the appropriate Sister/Staff on any relevant changes observed to the patients condition.
5. Inform senior staff of any changes in circumstances, which may affect the delivery of patient care.
6. Answer the telephone when necessary and greet visitors courteously, refer calls to appropriate staff. Communicate messages clearly and precisely.
CLINICAL
1. Under the direction and supervision of professional staff, help to implement the safe care of patients in the Day Surgery Unit and Theatre complex.
2. Respect the customs, values and beliefs of the patients and maintain their dignity at all times.
3. Assist in the preparation and terminal cleaning of clinical areas, furniture and equipment within both areas when required and under the direct supervision of practitioners.
4. Assisting the qualified staff in all aspects within the Day Surgery Unit and Theatres as required.
5. Clinical and nonclinical waste disposal throughout the working day.
6. Collecting and returning sterile instruments/sets to and from the Sterile Stores and Sterile Service Department when required and as directed by qualified staff.
7. Movement of specimens, samples and pathology items.
8. Movement of patients within unit/department and to other departments in the hospital including escorting patients to theatres as necessary. Assisting in returning patients from recovery with qualified staff as required.
9. Collecting supplies from the supplies stores as required.
10. Putting pharmacy items in appropriate locations as required.
11. Collecting linen and scrub suit requirements as necessary when main Porters are unavailable.
12. Assisting in the care requirements of patients when necessary only under the direct supervision of qualified staff, such as moving immobile patients take into account correct moving and handling techniques; stripping and making of patients trolley’s.
13. Stocking up oxygen requirements and checking of oxygen cylinders daily.
14. Be smart in appearance and to wear the correct uniform in accordance with current Trust policy.
15. Follow safe working practices and to take reasonable measure for the protection of patients following instructions from clinical staff for the welfare of patients where appropriate.
16. Ad-hoc tasks as may be required from time to time at the instruction of qualified staff but within your limitations and guidelines.
