Senior Reinsurance Contracts Counsel (Hybrid; 80-100% working degree)

Swiss Re
London
Location: London, GB

Are you a qualified legal professional with expertise in reinsurance contracts looking to make a significant impact in a dynamic global organization? Join our team at Swiss Re where you'll shape the future of complex reinsurance agreements while navigating evolving regulatory landscapes in the London market. This role offers you the opportunity to combine your legal expertise with commercial acumen to drive excellence in contract governance.

About the Role

As our Senior Reinsurance Contracts Counsel, you'll be the designated legally qualified authority for complex reinsurance contract structures, ensuring regulatory compliance, enforceability, and legal risk mitigation. You'll provide definitive legal interpretation and guidance while representing Swiss Re in external market forums.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independent Legal Accountability - Act as the legally qualified sign-off authority for complex and high-value reinsurance contracts, providing definitive legal interpretation under applicable law.
  • Complex Contract Structuring - Lead the structuring and negotiation of legally complex, multi-jurisdictional reinsurance agreements while identifying and mitigating legal and regulatory risks.
  • Regulatory Governance - Own alignment of contract wordings with applicable UK and international regulatory frameworks and develop contract governance standards.
  • Strategic Market Representation - Represent Swiss Re in external market forums, industry associations, and regulatory discussions, influencing market-standard contract language.
  • Functional Leadership - Provide expert legal mentorship and technical oversight to junior team members while acting as an escalation point for complex matters.
  • Technology Transformation - Provide senior legal input into contracts technology infrastructure and translate legal requirements into guidance for digital contracting tools.

About the Team

The Reinsurance Contracts function at Swiss Re plays a critical role in ensuring the legal integrity and compliance of our complex reinsurance agreements. Our team navigates heightened regulatory oversight and increasing complexity in multi-jurisdictional contract structures, providing legally accountable oversight for reinsurance contracts in the London market. We work collaboratively with Product Centre teams and Underwriting teams to design and implement robust contract frameworks that protect Swiss Re's interests while facilitating business growth.

About You

You're a detail-oriented legal professional with a strategic mindset and excellent judgment. You thrive in complex environments where you can apply your expertise to solve challenging problems. With strong communication skills, you can influence senior stakeholders and represent the organisation externally with confidence and authority. You're passionate about mentoring others and contributing to team development.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Fully qualified England & Wales lawyer with 5+ years' experience either within a re/insurance company or in private practice specializing in re/insurance
  • Deep expertise in drafting, negotiating, and interpreting complex reinsurance contract wordings
  • Strong knowledge of UK and international regulatory frameworks relevant to the London market
  • Proven experience handling multi-jurisdictional legal matters and high-value, complex transactions
  • Strong ability to identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks within contract structures
  • Experience engaging with industry bodies, regulatory discussions, or market forums

Compensation & Work Model

For the United Kingdom, the base salary range for this position is between £100,000 and £150,000 for a full-time role.

The specific salary offered considers:

• the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role

• the applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience

In the situation where you do not meet all the requirements or you significantly exceed these, the offered salary may be below or above the advertised range. In addition to your base salary, you may be eligible for additional rewards and benefits including an attractive performance-based annual bonus.

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
