The post holder will be a key member of the pharmacy team, providing specialised clinical pharmacy services to the Gastroenterology and GI Surgery departments. The role involves leading and developing pharmacy services to meet the specific needs of patients in these areas, ensuring optimal medication management and patient care. The post holder will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, offering expert pharmaceutical advice and ensuring safe and effective medication use for patients undergoing gastrointestinal treatment and surgeries.
Additionally, the post holder will support the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Ophthalmology in managing the pharmacy team. Responsibilities include assisting with team management, policy development, and the delivery of high-quality pharmacy services. A critical part of the role will be liaising between hospital wards, departments, and pharmacy to tailor services to meet the needs of the Care Group.
The post holder will also be responsible for conducting medication reviews, therapeutic drug monitoring, and recommending alternative treatments when necessary. They will contribute to staff education and professional development, ensuring the department stays updated with the latest advancements in gastroenterology and GI surgery. Overall, the post holder will ensure that pharmacy services are responsive to the evolving needs of the Care Group, delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
Main duties of the job
- Act as a specialist role model and an expert in the medical management within Gastroenterology
- Lead and manage clinical pharmacy services in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, delivering and promoting high quality, cost-effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
- Provide patient and carer education.
- Promote safe drug use within Gastroenterology & GI Surgery .
- Development, implementation and audit of local guidelines.
- Regular financial reporting, drug usage and expenditure forecasting, and drug budget management.
- To participate in practice and clinical research and audit.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership
The main responsibilities of the post holder will be:
• To deputise for the Principal Pharmacist for Planned Medicine as necessary.
• To lead clinical pharmacy services for patients treated within Diabetes/post-acute medicine within the Planned Medicine/ Acute Speciality care group in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.
• To propose and implement policies and procedures designed to improve the pharmacy service to patients in the Trust in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist in line with national and international consensus guidelines.
• To lead and comment on policy and service changes and plans within the clinical pharmacy service and to contribute to, and participate in, pharmacy service developments in line with departmental and Trust policy .
• To develop, implement, monitor and evaluate evidence-based prescribing guidelines and protocols for use both Trust wide and within Specialist Medicine.
• To ensure services provided are in line with local and national policies, guidelines and frameworks
• To contribute and adhere to clinical pharmacy service standards.
• To proactively support the development of ward and clinical pharmacy services to Diabetes/post
acute medicine within the Planned Medicine/ Acute Speciality care group in order to advance the safe, clinically effective and cost effective use of drugs to patients.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MPharm (Masters Degree)
- Registered Pharmacist (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent qualification / experience
- Registered Independent Prescriber or willingness to complete
Desirable criteria
- Member of the RPS faculty
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Maintains a broad level of pharmacy practice
- Appropriate post registration experience in hospital Pharmacy or equivalent area of practice with assessed competencies
- Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy
- Experience in directorate pharmacy
- Experience of protocol/guideline development
- Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
- Experience of delivering training and education at postgraduate level
- Experience of practice research or audit
- Be able to provide highly complex Information on medicines use, clinical pharmacy and financial issues to all levels of healthcare professionals (up to and including senior consultants/professor level)
- Be able to implement and manage change
- Be flexible in responding to demands of the service
- Be methodical in approach
