Nursing Associate (Neonates)

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated Nursing Associate with Paediatric/Neonatal experience, who enjoys working within a team of dedicated staff.

We are seeking a highly motivated Nursing Associate to join our Team of Neonatal Nurses on our Busy Level 3 Medical and Surgical Unit. You will need to be registered with the NMC as a Nursing Associate. If you have exceptional communication skills, a passion for delivering optimum standard of care, driving quality, and is committed to delivering excellent family integrated care in a supportive environment then we would love to hear from you!

The 36 bedded Neonatal service based within the Variety Children’s Hospital provide care for new-born babies with surgical conditions, as well as sick and premature new-born babies with medical conditions.

We work closely with the world-renowned Harris Birthright Centre for Fetal Medicine which gives us the opportunity to translate cutting-edge research and existing best practice into excellent patient care. Having such close links with Harris Birthright Centre for Fetal Medicine allows us access to complex surgery and care for neonates who are on the cusp of viability.

In addition to this, we also facilitate rotation placements to our newly commissioned Level 2 Neonatal Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To uphold and display the Trust values of Kind Respectful Team.
  • To provide and monitor safe, family centred care to a designated group of patients and families in a specialised care setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse, without direct supervision in line with an agreed plan of care.
  • To play an active role within the multidisciplinary team, communicating and collaborating effectively with both the nursing and medical team as well as a range of other professionals.
  • Identify risks and concerns to safety or experience, taking appropriate action within their scope of practice and escalating to the NIC/Medical Team.
  • To support, supervise, assess and act as a role model to nursing associate students, other learners and health care support workers as required within the clinical setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To provide and monitor safe, person centred care to a designated group of patients, service users and families in a range of care settings under the direction of a Registered Nurse, without direct supervision in line with an agreed plan of care.

• To support the registered nurse and contribute to the on-going assessment and care planning of patients and service users in order to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and wellbeing.

• To act in the best interests of patients and service users to promote and prevent ill health and contribute to their integrated care.

• To monitor the condition and health needs of patients and service users on a continual basis in partnership with colleagues, families and carers, referring to others for reassessment.

• The Nursing Associate will actively contribute to an effective learning environment and support others in their learning.

• We provide internal and external study days linked to Paediatrics, and have close working links with Paediatric Emergency Department, Children’s Outpatients as well as the ambulatory care unit.

• Nursing Associates will recognise and adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Nursing Associates and work within their scope of practice following the professional standards of practice and behaviours for nurses, midwives and nursing associates and the standards of proficiency.

• To comply with the Trust’s Safeguarding Children and Adults policies, procedures and protocols. All individual members of staff (paid or unpaid) have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. This will require you to:

  1. Ensure you are familiar with and comply with the London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
  2. Ensure you are familiar and comply with the London Multi Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan London Procedures.
  3. Ensure you are familiar and comply with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
  4. Know the appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
  5. Participate in required training and supervision.
  6. Comply with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct.

Person specification

Education, Knowledge & Experience, Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
  • Nursing Associate foundation degree qualification
  • GCSE Grade A-C in Maths & English or skills level 2 Maths & English or equivalent
  • Understands and acts in line with NMC professional standards for practice contained within The Code
  • Ability to recognise when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice
  • Professional at all times, motivated , enthusiastic and able to motivate others
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and non-verbal communication) with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload
  • Ability to deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of workload and individual patient contact
  • Ability to support, supervise, assess and act as a role model to nursing associate students, other learners and health care support workers as required within the clinical setting.
  • Neonatal or Paediatric Experience
