Senior Manager Underwriting Performance & Technical Excellence (80-100%)

Swiss Re
London
Location: London, GB

Join Group Underwriting and play a key role in implementing and operationalizing underwriting performance frameworks across our global business units. Working closely with the Head of Underwriting Performance & Technical Excellence, you'll help translate strategic frameworks into practical applications that drive disciplined underwriting practices and enhance portfolio performance across Swiss Re.

About the Role

In this important position, you'll support the development and implementation of the Group's underwriting return and Actual vs Expected (AvE) management frameworks. You'll lead critical components of the Group AvE cycle, collaborate with business units and group functions to deliver the AvE roadmap. You'll translate performance insights into actionable recommendations that enhance portfolio steering and technical excellence across the organization. While spanning all business units, this position has a focus on L&H.

Key Responsibilities

  • Framework Development & Implementation - Work closely with the Head of UW Performance& Technical Excellence to establish, maintain and continuously improve the Group underwriting return and AvE management frameworks; define methodologies, standards, templates and processes that lift technical excellence across the BUs

  • AvE Cycle Leadership - Lead the Group AvE cycle for the assigned scope (BUs, portfolios, or processes); set cadence and templates for reviews, ensure on-time/to-standard submissions, challenge drivers and action plans, and synthesize outputs into a coherent underwriting narrative across BUs for GUC/GEC/BOD

  • BU engagement - Primary counterpart to BU portfolio leads in scope; within the Group frameworks, BUs own and deliver their AvE roadmaps, while you enable adoption, coordinate cross-BU dependencies, monitor milestones, verify realized impact, and escalate issues within your scope

  • UW Analytics & Reporting – Interpret BU reports and analyses to synthesize a Group perspective; reconcile methods, translate insights into TLP recommendations (e.g., mix, capacity, volatility), run Group-level scenarios and sensitivities to complement BU inputs

  • Cross-functional collaboration - Coordinate with Finance, Risk, Reserving, Actuarial Control and related functions to apply Group AvE management framework; prepare reconciliations, surface discrepancies and propose solutions

About the Team

You'll join the Group Underwriting team, reporting directly to the Head of Costing and Governance and working closely with the Head of Underwriting Performance & Technical Excellence. The team plays a pivotal role in establishing underwriting standards and frameworks across the organization, ensuring consistent application of best practices throughout our global operations. Balancing deep technical expertise with strategic business insight, the team drives the development of global costing methodologies, underwriting frameworks, and AvE insights to enhance data-driven decision-making across the enterprise.

About You

You're an experienced underwriting/actuarial professional, motivated by enterprise-level impact and passionate about strengthening underwriting discipline and AvE outcomes. You are proactive, ownership-minded, comfortable challenging the status quo to drive changes.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 5+ years' experience in L&H functions such as pricing, valuation, portfolio management or similar

  • Actuarial qualification or equivalent analytical expertise

  • IFRS know-how, understand how underwriting KPIs flow into reported results

  • Clear communicator who can tailor complex analysis to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Strong collaboration skills and stakeholder management across functions and seniority levels

  • Project management proficiency: planning, prioritization, milestones, and follow-through

For London, the annual base salary range for this position is between GBP 94 000 and GBP 140 000 (for a full-time role). The specific salary offered considers:
