The Environment and Society Centre (ESC) provides governments, businesses and societies with the information, networks and tools to tackle environmental challenges and accelerate the world towards a sustainable future through independent, thought-leading research.

Our research demonstrates the interconnected, systemic impact of environmental challenges on both international geopolitics and local communities – and generates solutions to help mitigate, adapt and build resilience in the face of climate change and natural resource depletion.

We are looking for a go-getting Programme Coordinator who is excited to play a key role in supporting our activities, including our financial administration, events, publications and research projects and proposals.

Principal Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Assist the Centre in developing budgets for funding proposals and contribute to drafting grant proposals.
  • Support the Environment and Society Centre, and institute-wide initiatives to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of activities.
  • Update and manage the Centre’s database of prospects and contacts and ensure timely follow-up in communications and engagement.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the Chatham House EDI strategy,

Delivery

  • Assist with planning and coordination of events, workshops, conferences, and roundtables, including drafting of agendas and concept notes, and management of invitations, participants’ travel, publicity, and other logistics.
  • Promote the Environment and Society Centre’s activities, including newsletters, social media and announcements, and ensure effective dissemination.
  • Financial administration: assist with financial reporting and keep track of project budgets' day-to-day income and expenditure.
  • Support with grant reporting, including preparation and submission of progress reports.
  • Coordinate projects from inception to delivery, ensuring project remains on track and
  • Assist with the administration of consultants and Associate Fellows.

People

  • Ensure timely and regular internal communications on the Centre’s activities and news amongst staff, consultants and Associate Fellows
  • Build positive relationships with colleagues and create a positive working culture, ensuring good practice is shared and embodying the institute's high-quality standards.
  • Direct support to members of the research and operation teams as required.
Personal Specification
Essential skills and experience
  • Outstanding administration, coordination and organisational skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and able to work under tight timeframes whilst balancing various tasks.
  • Excellent, professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in coordinating and delivering high quality events for online meeting platforms and for large in-person events.
  • Experience using digital communication channels e.g. Bluesky, LinkedIn, X and email promotion tools.
  • Some experience with budgeting and financial reporting.
  • A collaborative approach, able to form positive working relationships with people at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with Office 365 suite (inc. MS Teams, Word and Outlook).
  • Good command of Excel.

Desirable

  • Experience working with databases/CRM software.
  • Experience working in a similar organisation.
  • Good general knowledge of global affairs and an interest in environment, climate change, energy transition or sustainable natural resource use.

Benefits

Benefits include approximately 37 days annual leave (including public holidays and Chatham House closure days), pension salary exchange, employee assistance programme, parental leave, flexible working and other benefits designed to suit your lifestyle. Salary: £32,000 per year.

Contract: Full-time, 12 month fixed-term contract (FTC).

Location: St James's Square, London. Chatham House operates a hybrid working environment with team members expected to attend our stunning building typically two days a week
