Head of Product

Patchwork Health
London
About Us

Since 2016, Patchwork Health has been on a mission to make truly flexible and sustainable working a reality for all healthcare staff. Their fully integrated workforce management solution helps optimise outcomes for organisations, managers, staff and patients alike. Built by a team of dedicated healthcare veterans, and co-created with the NHS, their technology and services have been embraced by over 100 healthcare sites to date.

Patchwork offers a range of different solutions, including temporary staff banks, which enable organisations to source temporary staff from their own pool of approved workers; ‘collaborative staff banks’, which help healthcare organisations team up with others in the same region to widen and share their temporary staffing pools; an innovative new rostering solution which enables more flexible, sustainable staffing for permanent healthcare staff; and an Agency Manager which makes it easier for managers to select appropriate temporary staff from external agencies when necessary. Patchwork Insights also provides managers with comprehensive data oversight, to monitor staffing trends, shift fill rates and pay rate escalations, and reliably plan ahead to prevent staffing gaps.

Patchwork Health has been recognised as HSJ’s 2022 Staffing Solution of the Year, and have recently received the prestigious HSJ Partnership Award and the Spectator’s Economic Innovator of the Year Award.

The Role

The Head of Product’s primary responsibilities will be to work with the CTO, translating Patchwork’s product vision for multiple products into reality, and building the system that builds the products. Leading, coaching and inspiring the Product Team, the role holder will own, shape, and balance priorities to meet Patchwork’s short-term objectives, whilst considering long-term needs.

The Product team works closely with the wider Technology Team and other business areas, and spends time with our customers, bringing client market insight and client feedback into our prioritisation processes, to ensure we are delivering innovative, customer-centric, and commercially successful products.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • The role holder is responsible for the development, nurturing, and output of their team, and is expected to uphold Patchwork’s values and standards of excellence in leadership.

  • Developing a Product Operating Model which includes researched and data-driven discovery, customer awareness, and striking the right balance between strategic vision, tactical planning and customer responsiveness.

Product Strategy

  • Supporting the CTO in the definition and delivery of Patchwork’s product strategy and mission, providing clarity and direction to the Product Team and collaboratively with the Engineering Team and the wider business, fostering a cross-functional, user-focused, and outcome-driven culture.

  • Guiding product prioritisation via Patchwork’s business units process to balance long-term strategy, short-term tactical requirements and client responsiveness.

  • Developing a strong mission-aligned product culture, allowing for innovation, experimentation, creativity and idea sharing.

Product Management & Design

  • Using agile methodologies, and product management expertise to maintain a high place of feature delivery, working tightly with engineering squads to eliminate sources of friction.

  • Defining and tracking product metrics for ROI, USPs and feature adoption, to guide future development focus areas for the business units.

  • Embedding a culture of analytics, hypothesis testing and feedback loops to continuously improve product-market fit.

Product Portfolio Vision

  • Understanding how Patchwork’s product suite solves workforce management problems for our customers, by ensuring the Product team regularly meet with customers and build deep and specific insights into their problems.

  • Defining how the product suite will grow and change to increase market share and expand into new markets.

  • Regularly assessing each product according to its market share, growth potential, maturity and commercial goals.

  • Reviewing the current and forecast P&L for each product, and measuring R&D spend, ensuring it is focused in the correct areas.

  • Communicating this vision to the whole company, succinctly and regularly, ensuring that there’s cross-departmental alignment.

Product Planning

  • Leading the Product Team to translate product strategy into actionable roadmaps and measurable goals.

  • Creating and maintaining a coherent 12 month roadmap for the whole portfolio, using the Now/Next/Later categorisation. Balancing new features with technical debt and medium term sales goals.

Operational Excellence

  • Building and maintaining a single, consistent, all-products metrics dashboard which provides data to speak for our value propositions, and supports decisions to adjust spending to improve ROI.

  • Improve consistency, simplicity and structure in product planning, so that it is easier to compare product roadmaps and processes like-for-like.
