At M&S, sustainability (which we call Plan A) is at the heart of everything we do. We're looking for a strategic and passionate  Sustainability Manager as part of the Central ESG team with responsibility for our Group-wide net zero emissions strategy and approach to water, waste, responsible sourcing and biodiversity. This is a multi-faceted role, giving you accountability for our carbon reporting and climate risk as well as playing a key role to support the Head of ESG in the overall business sustainability strategy, targets and action planning.

This is a high-impact role working collaboratively with the Central ESG team as well as with Plan A teams in our Foods, Fashion, Home & Beauty, International, Property & Retail businesses, and key functions including Finance, Logistics and Digital & Tech.

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.

What’s in it for you

Being a part of M&S is exactly that – playing your part to bring the magic of M&S to our customers every day. We’re an inclusive, dynamic, exciting, and ever evolving business built on doing the right thing and bringing exceptional quality, value, service to every customer, whenever, wherever and however they want to shop with us.

Here are some of the benefits we offer that make working for M&S just that little bit more special…

  • After completing your probationary period, you’ll receive 20% colleague discount across all M&S products and many of our third-party brands for you and a member of your household.
  • Competitive holiday entitlement with the potential to buy extra holiday days!
  • Discretionary bonus schemes awarded based on how you achieve your personal objectives and our performance as a business.
  • A generous Defined Contribution Pension Scheme and Life Assurance.
  • A dedicated welcome to our teams with a tailored induction and a wide range of training programmes to develop your skills.
  • Amazing perks and discounts via our M&S Choices portal to maximise your financial and personal wellbeing.
  • Industry-leading parental, adoption and neonatal policies, providing support and flexibility for your family.
  • Access to a fantastic range of wellbeing support for all colleagues including access to our 24/7 Virtual GP and PAM Assist to support you and your family.
  • A charity volunteer day to support a charity or cause you're passionate about through a dedicated day away from work.
  • What you’ll do

Your key accountabilities will include

  • Strategic Leadership & Compliance: Define and lead the Group’s net zero strategy, ensuring alignment with commercial plans and compliance with current and future legislation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Plan A teams and key functions (Finance, Logistics, Digital) to develop credible emissions reduction plans and integrate climate risks into business planning.
  • Performance Tracking & Reporting: Own internal and external reporting of climate/net zero targets, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and alignment with best practice and stakeholder expectations.
  • Policy & Technical Expertise: Advise on regulatory changes, support external disclosures (e.g. TCFD, Modern Slavery Statement), and ensure robust policies across environmental and responsible sourcing agendas.
  • Innovation & Industry Engagement: Manage the Plan A Accelerator Fund, build sustainability capability across M&S, and represent the business in key industry forums to bring in new thinking and horizon scan for emerging trends.

Who you are

Your skills and experience will include

  • Strong experience across sustainability topics including carbon, water, waste, and human rights.
  • High analytical and numerical skills, with expertise in GHG Protocol, SBTi, and TCFD.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex issues.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence across multiple functions.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a track record of setting and delivering against targets.
