Clinical Nurse Specialist- Children's Epilepsy

Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Children's Epilepsy Nurse Specialist (Band 7) to join our Children's Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop specialist epilepsy services for children and young people across community, primary and secondary care settings.

The post holder will provide expert clinical care, advice, education and support to children and young people with epilepsy and their families, delivering care in clinics, schools, homes and hospital settings. Working autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in improving health outcomes, supporting self-management, and ensuring children receive high-quality, evidence-based care throughout their epilepsy journey.

As a clinical leader, you will contribute to service development, clinical governance, education and training, while acting as a specialist resource for healthcare professionals across Croydon. You will work closely with paediatricians, community teams, schools, GPs and other partner organisations to coordinate care, facilitate smooth transitions into adult services, and drive continuous improvements in patient experience and service delivery.

This role is ideal for a skilled children's nurse with specialist epilepsy knowledge who is passionate about delivering outstanding care, empowering families, and shaping the future of children's epilepsy services.

Main duties of the job
Provide expert nursing care, assessment, advice and support for children and young people with epilepsy across community, outpatient, home and school settings. Act as an autonomous specialist practitioner, using advanced clinical decision-making skills to improve patient outcomes and quality of care. Support children, young people and their families from diagnosis onwards, providing education, emotional support and guidance on epilepsy management and treatment. Coordinate care and work collaboratively with paediatricians, community teams, schools, GPs, pharmacists and other multidisciplinary professionals. Manage a specialist epilepsy caseload and facilitate effective care pathways across primary, secondary and community services. Lead on the development and continuous improvement of the Children's Epilepsy Service, ensuring care is evidence-based and aligned with national standards and best practice. Provide education and training to healthcare professionals, families, schools and carers to improve understanding and management of epilepsy. Support the safe transition of young people with epilepsy into adult services. Monitor service quality, undertake audits, analyse activity data and contribute to clinical governance, risk management and service evaluation. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, acting as a specialist resource and professional role model.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• RN Child Branch
• Educated to degree level and working towards masters or hold equivalent level of experience
• Holds recognised epilepsy qualification or significant documented experience with willingness to undertake additional training.

Desirable

• Masters qualification.

Knowledge
Essential

• Working knowledge of current policies and documents relating to best practice for children & young people with epilepsy.
• Experience of MDT/Multiagency working including with primary, community and acute colleagues.
• Experience of managing a defined caseload and ability to work under pressure to manage work load and meet deadlines

Skills
Essential

• Involvement in research and audit
• IT skills to write reports, develop power point teaching packages
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of patients and professionals.

Desirable

• Independent prescriber
• Advanced assessment skills
