Head of Pre-construction
Purpose of the role
The Head of Preconstruction will liaise with the commercial, planning & operational leads to select business opportunities and engage with external parties to promote the company and secure new projects. They will work closely with the Commercial Director to discuss and agree on commercial decisions for each bid before submission. This role requires managing pre-construction teams to ensure the preparation of technically sound and well-presented documentation as required by clients. Additionally, the Head of Preconstruction will assess training and development needs, implement training initiatives, and effectively promote the company in all external communications. The role reports directly to the Commercial Director.
Role Specifics
- Leadership & Strategy: Develop and implement preconstruction strategies to enhance project success, aligning with business goals and client expectations.
- Bid & Tender Management: Oversee the bidding and tendering process, ensuring robust submissions that meet technical, commercial, and operational requirements.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Foster strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams to drive collaboration and project viability.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential risks in project feasibility, cost, design, and delivery before contract award.
- Value Engineering: Ensure value-driven solutions by optimising design, methodology, and construction techniques without compromising quality or compliance.
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor the preconstruction team, ensuring continuous improvement and professional development.
- Innovation & Best Practices: Keep abreast of industry advancements and integrate best practices, digital tools, and sustainability initiatives into the preconstruction process.
Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in preconstruction, bid management, estimating, or project planning within construction or civil engineering.
- Proven leadership experience in managing preconstruction teams and processes for large-scale, complex projects.
- Strong technical knowledge of construction methodologies, contracts, and regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent commercial and financial acumen with a track record of successful project acquisition and cost management.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
- Exceptional communication and management skills.
- Proficiency in relevant preconstruction software and digital tools.
- Management and planning of complex projects, including third-party interfaces at the preconstruction phase.
- Extensive experience in complex demolition and groundworks contracts, including facade retention, temporary works, and rail interface works.
- Knowledge of complex structures and construction methods.
