Staff Product Designer, Acquiring & Design System
Company Description
We’re Checkout.com . You might not know our name, but companies like eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony do, because we’re behind many of the digital experiences you use every day.
We are where the world checks out, enabling over 10 billion transactions yearly for more than one billion global shoppers.
About the team
You’ll join a Design organisation of 30+ specialists across Product Design, Research, Content, and Technical Writing. Embedded in Product Design, you’ll work across You’ll work Acquiring, our products and infrastructure that help merchants accept and process payments, and Checkout.com’s cross-pillar design system.
You’ll report to the Director of Enterprise Product Design and work from our London office three days a week.
The role
We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to balance two connected responsibilities: lead design for Acquiring and evolve Checkout.com’s design system.
The design system accelerates and unifies product delivery, while Acquiring keeps its evolution grounded in practice. You’ll elevate the design system through code-first and AI-integrated workflows while taking full design ownership of Acquiring and bridging existing coverage gaps.
While you won’t manage direct reports, your impact will be significant: shaping how the system evolves and how the Acquiring team ships. You’ll lead through exceptional craft, technical fluency, and influence.
What you’ll own
Lead end-to-end design for Acquiring, mentoring designers and raising craft quality through critique and guidance.
Evolve Checkout.com’s cross-pillar design system across products and surfaces, including dashboard and mobile experiences
Partner with Product and Engineering to apply the system to real product needs and implementation constraints.
Improve how teams move from design intent to production.
What success looks like
Acquiring has consistent coverage and craft quality, with designers set up to execute independently.
The design system scales to help teams deliver consistent, high-quality experiences across products, surfaces, and new initiatives.
The design team is able to ship experiences end-to-end (shipping code), empowered by the design system and AI tooling you lead.
Skills and experience
You don’t need to match every detail exactly. We’re looking for candidates who meet most of the core requirements and can show how they think, build, and work through ambiguity.
Core requirements
Staff-level product design scope or equivalent: set direction without formal authority and raise the quality of others through critique and mentoring.
Exceptional product craft across interaction, visual design, prototyping, and shipped experiences.
Ownership of complex product work, partnering closely with Product and Engineering from problem to delivery.
Experience shaping and evolving a production design system.
Technical fluency to collaborate with Engineering on implementation constraints and design-to-development workflows; this is not a front-end engineering role.
Shipped experience using AI-assisted design or development workflows, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent.
Nice to have
Payments, fintech, or B2B SaaS experience.
Experience with complex enterprise, platform, infrastructure, or technically demanding products.
Experience leading a Design System guild or improving design-to-development quality across desktop and mobile.
