About the role

Based in one of their hubs (Nairobi, Brussels, or London), CLASP is seeking an experienced Communications Director to lead CLASP’s global communications strategy, campaigns, and advocacy efforts. This senior role will shape CLASP’s brand and voice, manage high-impact campaigns, and strengthen our visibility across global audiences.

Reporting to the Chief Communications & Development Officer, the Director will manage a team of 7–10 staff and consultants across Europe, India, Indonesia, Kenya, and the US, with four direct reports. This role requires a leader who can balance vision with execution, inspiring a distributed team while driving measurable results.

Key dimensions of the role

The Communications Director will:

Provide strategic leadership: Design and oversee communications strategies, annual plans, and campaign roadmaps that support CLASP’s mission and impact.

Lead global campaigns: Partner with program and research leads, advocacy coalitions, and external stakeholders to design campaigns that influence policy, mobilize partners, and strengthen CLASP’s role as a thought leader.

Oversee digital presence: Manage websites, social media channels, newsletters, and digital content production (articles, reports, videos, multimedia), ensuring quality, timeliness, and global reach.

Shape the brand: Monitor, protect, and evolve CLASP’s brand identity, ensuring message alignment across programs, geographies, and partnerships.

Build partnerships: Strengthen CLASP’s global network by cultivating relationships with media, NGOs, donors, policymakers, and influencers.

Lead and grow a team: Supervise, mentor, and inspire a high-performing, international communications team; provide constructive, culturally aware feedback.

Manage resources: Oversee communications budgets, subcontractors, and vendors; ensure effective use of resources.

Track and improve performance: Establish KPIs, monitor communications impact, and adjust strategies based on evidence and feedback.

Support business development: Contribute to donor proposals, fundraising materials, and engagement strategies in partnership with the development team.

Represent CLASP externally: Attend global conferences, represent CLASP in high-level dialogues, and connect with diverse audiences to share our story.

Skills and experience

CLASP seeks a strategic and hands-on communications leader with:

10+ years’ experience in strategic communications, advocacy, and campaigns, with proven impact.

Background in climate change, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable development, international diplomacy, or related fields strongly preferred.

International experience leading communications across multiple time zones and cultures.

Strong digital communications skills, including experience with Canva, HubSpot, WordPress, Adobe Creative Cloud, Trello, and Microsoft Office.

Demonstrated ability to manage and grow global teams, balancing strategic leadership with operational oversight.

Experience managing editorial processes with technical experts and producing high-quality communications assets.

Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to influence across diverse stakeholders — from donors and policymakers to NGOs and media.

Exceptional project management skills: ability to set priorities, manage budgets, oversee contractors, and deliver under pressure.

Experience developing fundraising and donor engagement materials.

Strong interpersonal skills, with a collaborative leadership style, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to professional development of staff.
