SEN Teacher – SEMH (Secondary)

Full-time | Long-term opportunity

We are supporting a specialist SEMH secondary setting to recruit an SEN Teacher to join their established team working with young people aged 11–18 .

This is a small, purpose-built provision with a strong emphasis on character development, emotional regulation, and long-term outcomes for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

The Setting

The school supports a small cohort of pupils , allowing for genuinely personalised education and strong relationships. The ethos centres on nurturing potential, improving quality of life, and helping young people re-engage with education in a meaningful way.

Staff work within a clear values framework focused on community, relationships, trust, aspiration, and personal development.

Requirements

The Role

This role would suit a secondary-trained teacher, SEN teacher, or primary-trained teacher who is confident working with secondary-aged pupils with SEMH needs.

You will deliver a core curriculum at KS3 and KS4 , supporting pupils to achieve qualifications ranging from Entry Level through to Level 1, GCSE or Level 2 equivalents , depending on need and pathway.

Alongside subject delivery, the role includes contributing to personal development, PSHE, careers and character-based learning , supporting pupils’ wider development beyond academics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons for pupils with SEMH needs

  • Support pupils to achieve recognised qualifications appropriate to their ability

  • Deliver personal development, PSHE, careers, and character education sessions

  • Maintain a calm, consistent approach during periods of dysregulation

  • Use de-escalation strategies to support emotional regulation and learning

  • Build strong relationships with pupils, families, and colleagues

  • Contribute to a collaborative, values-led staff team

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent

  • Experience teaching secondary-aged pupils

  • Strong behaviour management rooted in relationship-building

  • Calm, emotionally intelligent, and resilient approach

  • Commitment to inclusive education and pupil wellbeing

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working in SEMH or alternative provision

  • Practical knowledge of de-escalation strategies

  • Familiarity with frameworks such as:

    • Emotion coaching

    • Nurture principles

    • Zones of Regulation

  • Willingness to adapt curriculum to meet complex needs
