Senior Radiographer - CT/Interventional Radiology

The Radiology department on the Denmark Hill site are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and motivated radiographer to provide strong clinical skills, leadership and teaching support within our busy, forward-looking department.

As a Band 7 radiographer you will be expected to be proactive in the day-to-day running of the CT and IR modalities and to deputise for the superintendents in their absence. We are looking for a candidate with the confidence to train and mentor our rotational radiographer staff group, particularly in advanced imaging applications. You will be able to continue to develop your clinical knowledge, managerial and leadership skills in this post.
This Band 7 post will incorporate rotation between CT and Interventional Radiology. While training will be given in all areas, successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate expertise in two of these specialist areas.
Candidates will be expected to participate in the out of hours rota which forms part of the 4 day week shift pattern.
Main duties of the job
- Actively lead in the training and development of radiographers, assistant practitioners and student radiographers, assuming professional responsibility for their work.
- Act as team leader, providing support and leadership for the other radiographers working within the department.
- Ensure clinical governance protocols are complied with and corrective actions taken where required.
- Perform out of hours duties, leading the Main Radiology on-call service for both ED and in-patients requiring emergency specialist imaging or intervention.
- Monitor and adjust work priorities in conjunction with other professionals to take into account changing demands on the imaging service due to emergencies, ensuring that the Trust emergency imaging targets are met, particularly during out of hours duties.
- Act as a source of knowledge on CT and interventional radiology matters to be consulted by other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Communicate complex information relating to procedures and radiation risks to staff, patients and carers and ensure informed consent for examinations.
- Contribute to service development initiatives in response to the findings of audit and recent evidence by implementing recommendations and monitoring their effectiveness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Act as both role model and clinical expert to facilitate the development of others through example and education.
- Demonstrate, maintain and update skills and knowledge of evolving practice and legislative requirements.
- Provide professional support to other radiographers.
- Actively lead in the training and development of radiographers, assistant practitioners and student radiographers, assuming professional responsibility for their work.
- Train rotational radiographers and radiology registrars or clinical fellows in the utilisation of highly complex, high capital cost specialist imaging equipment.
- Train radiographers and assistant practitioners where appropriate, in how to position patients appropriately for each scan or interventional procedure, adapting techniques in accordance with the patient’s needs.
- Review, develop and write protocols with a view to improving service planning alongside the Lead Superintendent and Superintendent Radiographers.
- Demonstrate, maintain and update skills and knowledge of evolving practice and legislative requirements.
- Be responsible for your individual CPD and support others. Also, participate in the department’s CPD program. In accordance with an assessment of own professional needs, participating in both internal and external events as well as private study.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc Diagnostic Radiography (or equivalent)
- Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification in Radiography, CT, IR or Leadership and Management (or working towards)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Post graduate training and a minimum of 2 years work experience in two specialist modalities (CT/Interventional Radiology), with evidence of recent CPD relevant to the role.
- Experience in supervision and training of less experienced radiographers, students and departmental staff in a specialised modality.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Experience of the daily management of a defined work area
- Able to present oral and written information effectively
- Awareness of NHS targets relevant to the Radiology department.
- Certificate of competence in administering intravenous injections
Desirable criteria
- Experience as a Radiation Protection Supervisor
- Experience of undertaking research and/or clinical audit
- Experience in advanced imaging techniques in at least one modality, e.g. cardiac CT, CT virtual colonoscopy, cone-beam CT.
- Experience in clinical governance and risk management
- Experience of managing staff through HR processes

- Able to operate manual handling aids as provided by the department including patient slide boards, sheets, hoists and trolleys.
