LOCATION: London - Hybrid PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £34,000 - £44,850 plus London Weighting, depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. We're happy to discuss flexible working. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE You’ll help shape the way millions of people experience BBC News by designing compelling storytelling formats and building the components that bring them to life. Working with a supportive, creative team, you’ll grow your craft in design systems and visual identity while contributing to projects that make a real difference to how audiences understand the news. As a Designer, you’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to create components and visual identities that bring editorial storytelling to life, building article experiences and strengthening our design system along the way. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND IMPACT: • Collaborate with product, editorial and engineering teams to design engaging storytelling formats.
• Contribute new components to the BBC’s design system, ensuring they are both visually expressive and technically robust.
• Shape and refine visual identities that bring clarity and consistency across platforms.
• Apply user-centred principles while prioritising craft, accessibility, and brand integrity.
• Share design best practice, fostering collaboration and consistency across the team. YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: • Strong portfolio demonstrating component design, visual identity, and system-level thinking.
• Proven experience with Figma and design systems.
• Solid understanding of accessibility, responsive design, and cross-platform delivery.
• Ability to work collaboratively with editorial, product, and engineering partners.
• Clear communication skills with attention to detail and craft. DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED: • Experience contributing to brand guidelines or visual identity systems.
• Familiarity with Adobe CC, motion, illustration, or other visual storytelling techniques.
• Awareness of current design trends and emerging digital storytelling practices.
• Understanding of prototyping methods to validate design decisions.
• Experience working in agile product development environments.
