Alan Cummings Day Surgery Unit is made up of 6 theatres and a 30-bedded ward area, situated within the Princess Royal University Hospital premises in Farnborough.

An exciting opportunity for a Band 5 nurse who wants to develop their clinical skills in a day surgery setting has arisen. The successful candidate will be working in a busy and fast-paced environment, caring for patients before and after their surgery in specialties including Gynaecology, Vascular, General Surgery, Breast, Laparoscopic, Dental, Orthopaedics, Urology, Pain, Maxillofacial, Paediatrics, and ENT Surgery.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to both perioperative patients and their relatives within King’s College Hospital.
  • To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of, or as delegated by, the senior nurse/coordinator of the day.
  • To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within the department.
  • To act as a clinical resource within the department and across the Care Group as necessary.
  • To act as a positive role model to junior members of staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist patients with activities of daily living while encouraging independence, as appropriate.
  • To demonstrate, encourage, and assist patients in undertaking therapeutic activities within the parameters of agreed care plans and under the guidance of registered practitioners.
  • To monitor and record patients’ clinical observations, escalating appropriately to a registered nurse as required.
  • To assist with patient nutritional needs – eating, drinking, menu selection, meal delivery, and special diets according to the individual patient’s requirements.
  • To assist in the maintenance of up-to-date, comprehensive, and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements, both written and digital.
  • To assist in the admission and discharge of patients, including any necessary risk assessments.
  • To undertake electrocardiogram (ECG) recording and point-of-care testing (e.g., blood sugar, urinalysis).
  • After appropriate training, to assist in the collection of specimens including blood samples (including from fixed central lines and established arterial lines – specialist areas only).
  • After appropriate training, to insert, secure, and remove female catheters; empty drainage bags; and accurately measure and record urinary output.
  • After appropriate training, to assist in the implementation of advanced wound care (e.g., skin closure using adhesive sutures, wound drainage care).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
  • To demonstrate expert knowledge in the daily practice of a day surgery unit.
  • To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of patients and their families using the latest evidence-based practice.
  • To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the needs of patients on an ongoing basis, coordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.
  • To accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information about the patients’ condition, instigate appropriate remedial action, and promptly report changes.
  • To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice, and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their relatives.
  • To ensure that accurate records are maintained, reflecting both changes in the patient’s condition and the treatment delivered.
  • To ensure that patients and their families are updated regularly with accurate information, presented in a sensitive way and in terms they understand.
  • To ensure that clinical guidelines are implemented and to be actively involved in auditing practice in conjunction with the line manager and practice development staff.
  • To ensure that practice is evidence-based and to support and assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area.
  • To uphold high standards of perioperative care according to existing policies and standards.
  • To support the process of continuous quality improvement by assisting in audits to formally evaluate standards of care and aid in implementing changes based on findings.
  • To organise patient transfers both within and outside the department, escorting ill patients as requested.
  • To contribute to the health education of patients and their families, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate advice and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • To actively support the implementation of the Trust nursing/local perioperative strategy and uphold the ethos of the local philosophy.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RN1) with active UK NMC registration at time of starting appointment
  • Awareness and understanding of current acute health issues
