We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our growing, dynamic nurse-led team in delivering SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) for patients with oncological, haematological, and non-malignant diseases. You should have experience in haematology and/or oncology, and be competent in delivering SACT.

This is an exciting opportunity for nurses with SACT experience who wish to further develop their clinical skills. We also offer a wide range of social events, which extend to our families and include trips to attractions and shows.

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has two Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) sites Denmark Hill (DH) and PRUH Chartwell CDU which work closely together. This post is based at the Denmark Hill site.

The post holder will play a key role in developing nursing expertise in the delivery of SACT, improving the patient experience for both malignant and non-malignant conditions. King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a centre of excellence for haematological malignancy and liver care, and we participate in ongoing clinical trials at local, national, and international levels.

We work collaboratively across the South East as part of the South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA). We are also part of King’s Health Partners and maintain strong links with Guy’s Cancer Academy and King’s College London.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert staff who will deliver SACT within the trust.
  • Deliver innovative nurse-led SACT service, work closely with nurse. practitioner to run clinics for patients receiving home delivery or self-administration of SACT.
  • Support patients and their families are fully informed and supported by providing clinical, emotional, psychological and social assessment.
  • Deliver and assist in the development of evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines.
  • Be advocate for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to both patients receiving chemotherapy and their relatives within King’s College Hospital.

  • Confidently manage a caseload and be responsible for the safe delivery of chemotherapy in accordance with national and Trust guidelines on the administration of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and cytotoxic therapy for non-cancer indications across the Trust.

  • Take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of, or as delegated by, the Unit Manager, Nurse in Charge, or Head of Department.

  • Assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of nurses within the unit.

  • Act as a clinical resource within the unit and across the Care Group as necessary.

  • Serve as a positive role model to junior staff members.

Particular emphasis is placed at King’s on ensuring all staff recognize their responsibility to deliver services in a high-quality, courteous, and patient-focused manner, while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st level Registered General Nurse (BSC/MSc).
  • Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards this
  • Significant experience in cancer care/haematology/ oncology
  • Completion of a recognised SACT course and or Completed UKONS SACT Passport

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the speciality
  • Management of central venous access devices

Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in SACT administration

  • Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions. Adapts communication style as necessary and is able to work with and through
  • Team building and working skills – able to lead a team to achieve results
  • Problem solving skills – able to respond to unexpected issues and provide first line response and to identify appropriate sources of secondary support
