Children in Need Service delivers statutory and non-statutory assessments and family support interventions to children and families of all ages across the borough. The Units are led by Consultant Social Workers who support and direct the delivery of outcome focused family support aimed at supporting children to safely remain living within their own families and engage positively with universal services provided within the community.

The post holder will provide practical and evidenced based support to children and their families to promote improved parenting capacity and understanding of the developing needs of children as part of the overall work of the Family Unit. Interventions are delivered in the family home or other settings and support the parenting role and child behaviour through the application of evidenced-based methodologies that promotes positive family interaction, positive behavioural/environmental change and a good standard of care.

The Family Support Service works closely with a range of statutory and non-statutory services supporting the work of children’s services across the council through delivery of high quality, effective and outcome focused family interventions.

Family Practitioners, under the supervision of the Consultant Social Worker or , will contribute to the overall effectiveness of the service through applying a persistent approach in assessment and intervention activities with families using assessment, observation, task centred, behavioural and systemic approaches with children, young people and their families.
Education, Training & Qualifications

⦁ NVQ Level 3 or equivalent child and family training.

⦁ Relevant and substantial experience of direct work with children and families.

⦁ A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at enhanced level is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. A good understanding of the context of child development in relation to parenting capacity, family and environmental factors.
  2. A good capacity to assess and balance risk and protective factors in families and communities.
  3. Ability to create a rapport and build professional relationships with children and families.
  4. Demonstrable ability to work effectively with children and families using a range of intervention tools and approaches.
  5. Ability to work creatively utilising good problem solving skills.
  6. Capacity to reflect on changing circumstances, new evidence and be open to the views of others.
  7. Capacity to prioritise tasks, manage own workload and be accountable for your work with children and families.
  8. Ability to summarise, analyse and evaluate complex information.
  9. Ability to work as part of a team, establish and maintain effective communication and good working relationships.
  10. Ability to work with other professionals demonstrating a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other agencies to promote an integrated approach and multi-disciplinary working.
  11. Reliability and integrity together with an enthusiastic and positive attitude towards staff, colleagues and peers and the capacity to apply diplomacy and demonstrate resilience in a complex and demanding environment.
  12. A keen interest in research findings and contributing to the development of best practice with children and families.
  13. A good working knowledge and understanding of national and local policy, procedure and guidance in relation to children in need and at risk.
  14. Capacity to share information verbally and by writing concise reports about children with other agencies in order to safeguard them and promote their welfare in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
  15. To be computer literate and in possession of the skills necessary to work with information management and recording systems.
  16. To undertake any duty as required, commensurate with the level and grade of the post.
