Lecturer in Computational Mechanics of Materials - Strand, London, WC2R 2LS
About us
We are a vibrant, diverse Department that looks to lead innovation in education and research at one of the world’s leading universities. To support our ambition, King’s has invested in new multi-million-pound teaching and research laboratories of more than 3000 sqm for the Department at heart of its Strand campus, which opened in August 2022.
We celebrate diversity and actively promote an inclusive environment and encourage applicants from underrepresented groups. In moving our ambitions forward, we are continuing to appoint academics to join us in shaping the future of education and research for King’s Engineering. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate education, with a distinctive approach, combining traditional teaching methods with modern, project-based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work.
It is essential that applicants have the enthusiasm and commitment needed to lead world-leading researching programmes, while also ensuring the success of these educational programmes.
About the role
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and ambitious academic to the post of Lecturer in Computational Mechanics of Materials. The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognised research programme focused on predictive modelling of material behaviour, with particular interest in deformation, microstructure-sensitive mechanics, and failure.
We welcome applications from candidates working in computational materials mechanics with expertise in finite element modelling and advanced constitutive frameworks. Of particular interest are candidates whose research includes crystal plasticity, computational deformation mechanics, and phase-field or related approaches for modelling fracture, damage, and microstructural evolution.
The role is especially suited to candidates whose research advances multiscale modelling of materials relevant to energy systems, advanced manufacturing, and structural applications, including metals, alloys, composites, and functional materials. Applications that bridge microstructure, processing, and mechanical performance are strongly encouraged.
In addition to establishing and leading their research group, the post-holder will contribute to teaching in mechanics, materials modelling, and computational engineering, and will support the Department’s strategic growth in computational materials science and engineering.
The post-holder will establish and lead an internationally competitive research programme in computational mechanics of materials, with particular focus on predictive modelling of deformation, microstructure-sensitive behaviour, and material failure. They will conduct high-quality research using finite element and related numerical methods to investigate material behaviour across scales, including crystal plasticity, damage, fracture, and multiscale materials modelling.
The successful candidate will contribute to the design and delivery of high-quality teaching in computational mechanics, materials modelling, and numerical methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will supervise student research projects spanning taught and research programmes.
The role will involve attracting and securing external research funding from UKRI and other national and international funding bodies, as well as from industrial partners, and supervising doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers within an inclusive and supportive research environment.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives across the Department and Faculty, particularly in areas related to energy materials, advanced manufacturing, and structural integrity, and to engage with external academic, industrial, and governmental partners to enhance research impact and visibility.
In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the administrative and academic citizenship responsibilities of the Department and Faculty, while fostering a collegial and inclusive culture and demonstrating a clear commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work.
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
