Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist with the day-to-day maintenance of the school site, including classrooms, outdoor areas, and shared facilities
  • Support the site manager/caretaker with basic repairs (e.g., fixing fixtures, minor plumbing, simple carpentry tasks)
  • Help ensure the school premises are clean, safe, and well-maintained at all times
  • Carry out routine inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment, reporting issues promptly
  • Assist with opening and closing the school, including unlocking/locking gates, doors, and windows
  • Support health and safety procedures, including fire safety checks, alarm tests, and emergency preparedness
  • Help set up rooms, halls, and outdoor spaces for school activities, assemblies, and events
  • Assist with grounds maintenance such as litter picking, basic gardening, and upkeep of play areas
  • Support contractors and external service providers working on-site, ensuring compliance with school procedures
  • Learn and follow safeguarding policies and ensure pupils’ safety is always prioritised
  • Maintain equipment and tools, ensuring they are stored safely and used correctly
  • Develop skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and relevant coursework as part of the apprenticeship
  • Work collaboratively with school staff, demonstrating reliability, initiative, and a willingness to learn
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as directed by the headteacher

Training schedule

The training will take place at work and 6 hours each week will be allocated to training.
