SEN Teacher – KS1 / KS2 (Adapted Curriculum)

Full-time | Permanent | Start: Spring 2026

We are working with a specialist SEN provision to recruit an experienced KS1 / KS2 SEN Teacher to join a dedicated team supporting pupils with complex social communication and autism-related needs .

This role sits within a separate adapted curriculum provision , designed for pupils who require a low-arousal, highly structured and therapeutic learning environment.

The Setting

The provision supports pupils across primary and early secondary phases , with small class sizes (maximum of 6 pupils) and a strong emphasis on communication, emotional regulation and functional learning.

Teaching is underpinned by a functional, hands-on curriculum , with communication at the centre of everything. Staff work closely within a multi-disciplinary team , including therapists and specialist support staff, to deliver a genuinely holistic educational experience.

Requirements

he Role

You will be responsible for planning, teaching and delivering an adapted KS1 / KS2 curriculum , supporting pupils to develop core communication, literacy, numeracy and life skills.

Working alongside an experienced MDT, you will design schemes of work that focus on independence, functional learning and emotional wellbeing , rather than purely academic outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver an adapted, functional KS1 / KS2 curriculum

  • Teach pupils with complex social communication needs and autism

  • Create and deliver schemes of work aligned to a functional curriculum framework

  • Use structured communication approaches to support learning and regulation

  • Manage and support a small class group in a low-arousal environment

  • Promote positive behaviour through consistent, nurturing practice

  • Work collaboratively with therapists, support staff and families

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent

  • Minimum 2 years post-qualification teaching experience

  • Experience delivering KS1 / KS2 curriculum (literacy and numeracy foundations)

  • Experience working with pupils with SEN, particularly autism

  • Strong classroom organisation and behaviour support skills

  • Clear, confident written and spoken English

Desirable Experience

  • Experience teaching an adapted or functional curriculum

  • Familiarity with frameworks such as:

    • Functional or life-skills-based curricula

    • Structured communication approaches (e.g. AAC / symbol-supported communication)

  • Experience supporting pupils with complex or challenging behaviours

  • Confidence working in highly structured, therapeutic environments

Benefits

  • Potential permanent, full-time role

  • Small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios

  • Strong multi-disciplinary team support

  • Opportunity to specialise further in complex SEN and autism provision

  • A role focused on long-term outcomes, not just academic results
