Band 5 Speech & Language Therapist Fixed-Term until November 2027

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and supportive SLT Team at the Royal London Hospital, a leading teaching hospital based in East London. If you want to develop your knowledge, skills and experience in acute hospital care then this post will offer excellent structured opportunities. You will join a supportive and dynamic team with great opportunities for developing specialist skills across the areas of:

  • Neurosciences
  • General Medical & Surgical
The post-holder will be supported to work through the RCSLT NQP and dysphagia competencies frameworks as required. They will be responsible for managing a caseload of patients with communication and swallowing impairments across acute inpatient and stroke wards with support. There will be opportunities to attend multi-disciplinary team meetings and ward rounds, and to participate in delivery of teaching/training to other professionals.

The service covers a large part of the culturally and economically diverse population of East London and covers four acute hospital sites and two community areas. You will be joining a large SLT department based across these sites with specialist expertise across the patient journey.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a Speech & Language Therapist for acute inpatient services at the Royal London Hospital. The post holder will be part of a team providing specialist assessment and treatment to adults in the acute setting with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. The post holder will be required to provide input along the various clinical pathways in the acute settings including neurosciences, health care of the elderly, general medicine, respiratory, trauma and Stroke Medicine. The post holder will work as part of the acute SLT team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by a Specialist SLT as well as the Clinical Lead SLT.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working with adults with acquired communication / swallowing disorders. This can be from placement however, examples of development of core skills in this area must be demonstrated
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable
  • Experience working with clients from multicultural/lingual backgrounds and working with interpreters
Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge and demonstration of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to acquired communication/swallowing disorders in adults including aphasia, cognitive-communication disorder, apraxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia
  • Knowledge of national policies, procedures and current research relevant to adult neurology and acute medicine
  • Knowledge of cultural and linguistic issues in working with a multi-cultural caseload
