Resident Medical Officer (RMO)

As Resident Medical Officer , you’ll play a crucial role providing on call cover for Cygnet Hospital Churchill, our 56-bed inpatient mental health hospital for men. The service has four wards including two emergency acute admissions services (Juniper Court and Palm Court) and two high support inpatient rehabilitation (level 2) services (Elm Court and Mulberry Court).
By combining a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach, we deliver high-quality care within a community atmosphere, while focusing on discharge planning from the moment service users arrive.
You'll be covering a mix of out of hours on call (5pm – 9am / weekends) and day shifts , with access to Consultant advice.
You'll be covering 2:5 On Calls (i.e. 10 weekdays on-calls and 4 weekend day on-calls over a 5 weeks period), these can be flexible and they can be spread across the 5 weeks.

Main duties and Responsibilities
- Assess new referrals and inpatients on admission by completing a thorough history and examination including physical examination.
- To ensure physical health and mental health care of patients are being met doing reviews with the nursing staff whilst on call.
- Liaise with the Consultant Psychiatrist on call when necessary for advice.
- The post holder will be expected to prescribe and review medication with the support of the Consultant Psychiatrist on call when required.
- Liaise with members of the MDT, GP’s, relatives and other professional agencies as needed.
- To do medical reviews on patients in seclusion or long term segregation.
- To ensure patient notes and documentation is completed in a timely manner.
- The post holder will be supervised regularly by the Medical Director or their nominee to ensure their training needs are assessed and supported to help with their professional and personal development plans.
- To ensure the Medical Director is kept updated in a timely manner regarding all clinical matters arising whilst on call by submitting appropriate handovers.
- The Specialty Doctor role essentially involves working as a ward doctor providing the physical and mental health needs of inpatients under the clinical supervision of the respective consultant psychiatrist.
- The SD role is to cover the ward doctors’ planned leave between 9am to 5 pm when the RMO duties will be temporarily suspended.

We are looking for someone who is…
- Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
- An excellent clinical decision maker, with sound judgement, the ability to manage risk & know when to ask for help
- Experienced in Psychiatry
- Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
