It’s an exciting time to join Southwark Council as an agency Children’s Residential Practitioner (Waking Night) as we prepare to open our very first children’s home. We are passionate about ensuring our children grow up in the borough they call home and surrounded by the people who matter most to them. Our vision is to transform the lives of children through meaningful, nurturing relationships and high-quality personalised care.
Working as part of a dedicated team, you will provide overnight care and support to children aged 10-17 years old with social and emotional needs. Your responsibilities will include:
Creating a safe, caring, and nurturing environment that promotes independence and positive experiences.
Managing overnight routines, responding to children’s needs, and providing reassurance when necessary.
Supporting children who may experience crises, ensuring they receive appropriate care and intervention.
Completing domestic duties to maintain a homely and welcoming environment.
Recording and updating children’s plans, providing clear handovers to the day team.
Administering medication in line with policies and procedures.
Attending training, supervision, and team meetings to continuously develop your skills.
It is essential that candidates have experience working in a children’s residential setting (e.g. children’s home). Please do not submit candidates if they do not meet this criteria.
A Level 3 Residential Childcare qualification (desirable).
Knowledge of safeguarding, child development, and person-centred care.
Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
The ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.
Knowledge, including educational qualifications:
1. Level 3 Residential Childcare qualification or equivalent qualification or commitment to undertaking the relevant course following the completion of probation.
2. Knowledge and understanding of child development and childcare.
3. Knowledge of legislation and statutory guidance in relation to children’s homes and safeguarding practice.
4. An awareness of and commitment to working in a non-discriminatory manner and supporting differing cultural, religious and racial needs.
5. Awareness of health and safety issues within a residential environment.
6. Demonstrate a general understanding of and commitment to the Councils Equality and Diversity Policy.
7. An understanding of the principles of person-centred working and how they would be implemented in a residential setting.
Experience:
1. Experience of working with children and young people with a residential setting.
2. Experience of working with young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
3. Experience of Safeguarding and Child Protection.
4. Experience of successful working in an integrated manner, including team working and partnership to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people.
Aptitudes, Skills & Competencies:
1. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
2. Ability to organise and prioritise own and other’s work responding to changing priorities and deadlines.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in writing, verbally and through reports.
4. Computer literacy skills at a level to maintain case records within information management systems.5. Ability to work in a person-centred way and fulfil the role of key worker, to advocate on behalf of residents and promote their independence.
