An Outstanding Secondary School in Merton is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Technician to join its well-established Science Department. The school has high expectations for both staff and students and is committed to delivering an engaging curriculum that encourages curiosity, independent thinking and academic achievement.
The Science Department benefits from well-equipped laboratories and a strong team of experienced teachers who deliver Biology, Chemistry and Physics across Key Stages 3 and 4, with opportunities for further study at A-Level. Practical experiments are an important part of the curriculum, allowing students to develop their scientific understanding through investigation and experimentation.
The school recognises the importance of its technical support team in ensuring that lessons run smoothly and safely. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a scientific background who enjoys practical work and wants to contribute to students' learning.
The Role
The successful candidate will provide practical and technical support to the Science Department, preparing laboratory equipment, chemicals and materials ahead of lessons. Working closely with teachers, the technician will ensure that practical activities are organised efficiently and that all resources are available when required.
Responsibilities will include setting up experiments, preparing solutions, maintaining laboratory equipment, monitoring stock levels and assisting with ordering supplies. The successful applicant will also ensure that laboratories remain clean, organised and safe, following appropriate procedures for chemical storage, handling and disposal.
The role will involve supporting practical lessons across different scientific disciplines, maintaining equipment records and reporting any damaged or faulty apparatus. Flexibility, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities will be essential in this busy school environment.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in science and practical laboratory work. Previous experience as a Science Technician in a school or laboratory setting would be beneficial, although applicants with transferable technical skills will also be considered.
Candidates should demonstrate strong organisational skills, an understanding of laboratory health and safety, and the ability to follow instructions carefully. Good communication skills and the confidence to work collaboratively with teachers and other support staff are essential.
