A well-established Secondary School in Brent is looking to appoint an experienced and committed Safeguarding Lead to join its student support and pastoral team.

Safeguarding is a key priority across the school. Staff work collaboratively to identify concerns early, respond appropriately and ensure students receive suitable support.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders, teachers, pastoral colleagues, students, parents and external professionals.

The Role

The Safeguarding Lead will oversee safeguarding procedures and act as a key point of contact for concerns relating to student safety and welfare.

You will manage safeguarding concerns, maintain accurate records and ensure that appropriate action is taken.

The role requires excellent professional judgement and the ability to deal with sensitive information calmly and confidentially.

You will also support safeguarding training and help ensure that staff understand their responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acting as a central point of contact for safeguarding concerns.

  • Managing safeguarding referrals.

  • Ensuring concerns are recorded accurately.

  • Maintaining confidential safeguarding records.

  • Working closely with senior leadership.

  • Providing guidance to staff.

  • Supporting staff with safeguarding procedures.

  • Contributing to safeguarding training and briefings.

  • Supporting safeguarding induction.

  • Monitoring safeguarding records and actions.

  • Liaising with parents and carers where appropriate.

  • Working with external safeguarding professionals.

  • Attending relevant professional meetings.

  • Contributing to multi-agency discussions.

  • Ensuring information is shared appropriately.

  • Supporting vulnerable students.

  • Monitoring safeguarding actions and outcomes.

  • Contributing to safeguarding audits and reviews.

  • Supporting safeguarding policy implementation.

  • Keeping up to date with relevant safeguarding requirements.

Safeguarding Culture

The school expects every member of staff to take responsibility for safeguarding.

The Safeguarding Lead will help maintain a culture where staff feel confident recognising and reporting concerns.

You will provide guidance to colleagues and contribute to regular safeguarding awareness and training.

The successful candidate must be approachable but also confident in challenging practice where required.

Working With Students

Students may approach the Safeguarding Lead directly with concerns, or information may be passed on by staff members.

You will need to listen carefully, respond appropriately and ensure concerns are managed according to established procedures.

The ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with sensitive information is essential.

You must maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.

Working With Parents and Carers

Where appropriate, you will communicate with parents and carers regarding safeguarding concerns.

These conversations may be sensitive, so you will need excellent communication skills and sound professional judgement.

You must ensure that information is communicated appropriately and in accordance with school procedures.

External Agencies

The successful candidate will liaise with relevant external professionals where further support or intervention is required.

You may be required to share appropriate information, attend meetings and contribute to discussions regarding individual students.

Accurate record keeping will be essential throughout these processes.

Staff Training

You will contribute to maintaining strong safeguarding awareness among staff.

This may involve supporting induction, staff briefings and safeguarding training.

You will help ensure colleagues understand their responsibilities and know how to report concerns appropriately.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in safeguarding or child protection.

  • Experience working with children or young people.

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding procedures.

  • Excellent professional judgement.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential information.

  • Confidence communicating with parents and carers.

  • Experience working with external professionals.

  • Ability to support and advise colleagues.

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.

  • Good IT skills.

  • Strong understanding of confidentiality.

  • Relevant safeguarding training or qualifications.

  • Commitment to student safety and wellbeing.

You must have the confidence to make appropriate decisions and escalate concerns when required.
